Chapter Eighteen

Kat

Ihadn’t told Henry that I’d already gotten a text from Becca about dinner. She had, in fact, already guilted me about the kids. I had already told her no. Because I had thought… I had KNOWN that Henry didn’t want me there. But he had really seemed sincere when he said he wanted me there. But…

But I needed to let him go. I wasn’t letting him go.

Flirting and teasing and going to his family birthday dinner wasn’t letting him go.

I just so, so badly didn’t want to. Tears pricked at my eyes as I pulled my headphones back on.

I took a sip of my coffee, finding it made exactly the way I liked it.

Because of course it was. Because in any other world, he was perfect for me.

I paused, though, before turning my music back on.

Because the way he had looked at me when thanking me for the candy.

And again, when I was licking the mug—don’t ask what I thought I was doing, I still didn’t know.

I may have blacked out for a second there.

But I saw him, even when he thought I didn’t.

And then again, when he was telling me he wanted me there. He seemed… sincere.

Maybe he wanted to be friends. We had been as children.

Maybe that’s what he wanted now. Maybe he wanted to find his own happiness, but still be friends with me and look out for me.

And maybe… maybe I could handle that. Maybe I could handle seeing him happy with someone else.

Maybe it would be better to at least have him in my life.

I wasn’t going to end up with anyone else—I had figured that out around the time I was signing that despicable NDA. But if I could at least see him happy, that would be enough. His happiness would be enough for me. It would have to be. And I knew a way to make him happy right now.

I picked up my phone and shot off two texts quickly.

I only hoped I’d made the right choice.
