Chapter Twenty-Three
Kat
Iwas already limping. Already freezing. And I was only halfway down the block. But I was about to have a complete meltdown and I didn’t want any of them to see me. My breaths were starting to come too fast, and I knew I only had moments. I was scurrying as fast as I could.
“Why’d you do that?” came a voice from behind me. I didn’t stop. I didn’t want to get it from Andrew, too. I couldn’t right now. It was too much.
“Kat, stop,” he insisted, grabbing my arm. I whirled around to face him, knowing I was already ugly crying. Oh, well. He could fucking face it.
“Why did I come tonight? Yeah, I know. I shouldn’t have.
My mistake. My big, fat, fucking mistake.
Got it. Did you come out here to yell at me some more out of earshot of the children?
Or just to revel in my devastation? Either way, I’m out.
I’m not doing this anymore. I need to try harder to keep away.
I know. I got it. I’ll do better,” I yelled.
I knew I was drawing attention, and that was honestly the worst-case scenario. Andrew was recognizable and the race was this weekend. There were fans everywhere. I spun back around and stomped off, ignoring the pain in my hip. Mostly.
I could hear him starting to say something back, but then I heard someone ask him for a picture. I smiled. It was likely a scary, vicious smile, but it was a smile.
I got away. And I was finally alone.
Just like I was meant to be.
