Chapter Twenty-Nine

Kat

“That’s not what I asked. Andrew?” I said, turning to the front seat. He looked over his shoulder.

“Yes, you look like a raccoon. And a drowned rat. And you probably shouldn’t take the jacket off because your dress is both see-through and dirty currently. Wait, what was the question?” he asked innocently. He knew what the question was. Ass.

Henry punched him in the arm.

“I mean, you look beautiful, Kat, as always. Not a single thing to change. Show up to a party with a bunch of your friends and a bunch of people you don’t know that are friends with us looking just like that,” he deadpanned. Had I mentioned? Ass.

I pulled out my phone, trying to simultaneously hold it and wipe under my eyes at the smeared mascara.

I didn’t have enough hands, and none of them worked right.

I winced as I smacked my plexi-cast a little too hard into my still-black eyes thanks to likely re-breaking my nose on Henry’s face the other night.

Had I apologized for that?

I couldn’t remember. I turned to him, mouth open to say something about it, when he snatched my phone out of my grip.

“Give me this and come here,” he commanded.

It was stupid. Very stupid. But that tone made me want to do the opposite of what he said.

I glanced up at him through my eyelashes, and a warning flashed in his eyes.

He knew what I was thinking. He leaned in close and whispered to me so Andrew couldn’t hear him.

“Now is not the time to be a brat, Kat. Don’t test me,” he said in a low tone. Now I REALLY wanted to be a brat. I sucked my lower lip between my teeth to keep the saucy grin from my face. I held still and turned toward him, though, looking up at the roof of the car so he could help.

“Good girl,” he said softly as he gently wiped under my eyes.

I shivered. I knew he felt it. I knew he knew exactly what he was doing.

I could see the smirk on his face at the bottom of my vision.

I was suddenly very glad he didn’t drink during the season.

It suddenly seemed very important one of us was sober tonight.

And it sure as hell wasn’t going to be me.
