Chapter 33
CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
The A&W root beer was great, and it was even better after Hunter got the idea to add some Morgan to their frosty mugs. Nothing like a little buzz added to a cold and refreshing drink. Since the weather was perfect, they’d nabbed an outdoor table, something Hunter regretted when an uptight woman sitting at a nearby table watched them spike their drinks and said, “Seriously? There are children here!”
From what he could see, there was only one kid in the area, and that was a little girl sitting next to her. But that didn’t matter because it was none of her damn business what he poured into his own drink. He gave her the finger, and she turned away, red-faced. The exchange made Pete laugh. Of course, the two of them had been laughing almost continuously since they’d left the motel, overjoyed at knowing that soon they’d have a pile of money.
When you felt this good, anything could be funny.
After finishing their food, they balled up their garbage and lobbed it into the metal container next to the parking lot. “We’ve still got it!” Pete yelled when his wad of rubbish bounced off the rim before dropping inside. He went to high-five his brother, and when their hands didn’t quite connect, it struck both of them as absolutely hilarious. Hunter laughed so hard, he wound up leaning over and clutching his knees to catch his breath.
Getting back into the cars, they settled on a radio station so they could sync up their music.
They drove out of the parking lot to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain.” CCR was a favorite of their grandfather’s, and they knew all the words, so they sang along as they turned back onto the interstate. Just like in the song, it was a sunny day, but unlike the song, there was no sign of rain coming down anytime soon.
They stayed in the right lane all the way, still following the speed limit. Other cars passed them like they were standing still, but now with food in their stomachs and enough alcohol to take the edge off, they didn’t mind as much.
At the apartment complex, Hunter waited while Pete put their car in their assigned spot and watched as his brother came to his window. “I gotta take a leak,” he said, and then instead of going in the bushes like Hunter would have, he headed to their apartment to use the bathroom.
Like a fancy gentleman.
Oh, what the hell . Hunter threw the car into park and shut off the engine, then got out to follow Pete inside. Just hearing his twin talk about it made him realize he could use a visit to the pisser as well.
No need to worry. They had plenty of time.
