Chapter 30

Serenity

After I came in through the door, I heard voices. Shit, they weren’t upstairs like I thought. I made my way around the counter and started to make out who was talking.

“What is happening to me, Claire? Call 911 please. I don’t want to die.”

I couldn’t tell who was talking, their voices sounded weird. I couldn’t make out the next part that they said, so I tried to move closer. Thank god, there are few lights on in here and I wore all black.

“Suck it up, Theo. This is what you wanted. I’m only helping you get there. The funny part is that the only thing that people will know is that you were a sick man and tried to break into my home. Then you overdosed in the middle of my living room. They will find the bottle of pills in your pocket, remember the ones you took earlier darling?”

I knew that voice, it was Claire. That means that the other voice was Theo. Why did he sound so weird? She was trying to kill him. My heart was racing so fast that I almost gave up where I was in the house but I couldn’t, I needed to stall as much as I can. I grabbed my phone and dialed 911.

“This is 911. What is your emergency?” I didn’t talk because I knew if I did, it would all be over.

“Hello? This is 911 are you there?” I pushed a digit to make a sound on her end so she knew I was on the line but couldn’t talk.

“Okay, if you need help, please push one button for yes and two for no.” Then I pushed one.

“Do you need medical attention to address that you are currently at?” I pushed one.

“Is there someone who is armed and dangerous?” I pushed one.

“Are you hurt badly?” I pushed twice.

“Is there someone else that is hurt?” I pushed one.

“We have an ambulance on the way as well as the police, please stay on the line until they get there.”

I started to hear Theo gasping for air and it made me scared.

“The whole story is such a tragedy, really. Heartbroken man who lost everything dies of overdose. I can see the headline now. I’ll even shed a few tears for you sweetheart. All I want is to watch you let go of your last breath.”

Shit, I couldn’t wait any longer. I started to get up but when I put my hand on the counter that was near me, I pushed something off. Claire turned around and saw me now. Fuck!

“How the hell did you get in here?” I looked over at the counter and saw a bowl with those purple berries, leaves, and a stick? It was those same berries that I saw outside. I turned back to her and saw Theo laying on the couch holding his throat. He was still gasping for air. He didn’t have much longer.

“Theo, I’m here. Everything will be alright, just hold on.” Claire walked over to him and grabbed his head and started to caress it.

“He’s overdosing, don’t you see? I already called the paramedics to come help him,” I said.

“We were about to make love and he started to act all weird so I helped him to the couch. You need to leave now or I’ll have them arrest you for trespassing on my property,” she said with no emotion. I even saw a tear coming to her eyes. What a fucking show.

“You can cut the act, I know that you killed your two husbands and now you’re trying to kill him too. I don’t understand why other than you’re some psycho bitch but that’s your issue.” She started to walk toward me and her sad eyes turned into something else.

“You don’t know who you are messing with, little girl. I will end you and your little career that you have going for you. Just leave and nothing will happen.” If this lady thought she was intimidating me, she was fucking hilarious. So time to put on my show.

“How about we go with my plan? You tell the truth about what you did and you might get a nice window view in your cell that you will be in for the rest of your life.” She started to laugh like I was joking. I didn’t joke when I tried to make deals with criminals.

“Last chance, Claire,” I said it with a little more enthusiasm in my voice. I actually was okay if she didn’t take it because she needed to be in a room that had no windows for the rest of her days. She finally stopped laughing and walked over to me and slapped me across my face and it actually almost made my eyes water. Now it was my turn to laugh.

“What are you laughing about?” I started to turn my face back to her then I pointed toward her front window where there were red and blue lights flashing through. I let my laugh die and just when she turned around, I knocked her square in her face. She fell to the ground and grabbed her nose.

“You won’t get away with this, look you just hit me. I will ruin you missy.” Her tears started falling faster now, and she was really egging on this damsel in distress thing. I started hearing another noise but when I turned, I saw Theo thrashing on the couch. Fuck, fuck, fuck. I ran to him and tried to hold him down when the cops ran in the house guns blazing.

“Get the paramedics please he’s overdosing!” I said in a panic as I tried to turn his body to the side.

Before I knew it, the paramedics were right next to me grabbing Theo. They shot something into him and it calmed him down. I saw another paramedic by Claire and before I could walk over to her, an officer stopped me.

“Are you the caller from earlier?” I looked up at him and nodded.

“She’s the one that you want.” I motioned to Claire where she was standing still putting on her show with another cop. I looked past the one who was talking to me and saw them taking Theo out the back.

“I need to go with him.” He looked back and saw the stretcher and moved aside. Just before I got to the door, I looked back and saw all the cops going toward Claire.

“Wait, What are you doing? I didn’t do anything? She broke into my house. She hit me. Look at my face. Stop!”

Hmm, maybe those tears were real now because she was finally realizing that it was over.

“They heard everything, Claire, so just stop the act. It’s over,” I said, then I turned away and ran after Theo. When I walked out the door, I hit that same planter as before.

“Damn it!” I looked down at it again and stared at it. Wait. I took a picture of it and ran to the ambulance. I just sat in the back and sat down next to Theo. He was still out cold. I looked at the picture on my phone and searched it online. When the name of the plant came up, I realized I did see this before. Deadly Nightshade. That was what she had in the bowl on the counter.

“He was poisoned: Deadly Nightshade. I feel so sick inside right now!” I yelled out loud, which made the guys sitting near me jump a little. If we weren’t in this situation, I would definitely give them shit for it. The paramedics looked at each other, then one called to the hospital to have something ready for when we got there.

“You’re going to be okay, Theo. I promise,” I said to him. All of a sudden, a bunch of loud beeping started.

“He’s crashing!” one of the paramedics yelled. This wasn’t happening, this couldn’t be happening.

“I’m starting chest compressions,” the other paramedic said. One of the guys was right on top of him pushing down on his chest while the other was trying to pump oxygen into him. I couldn’t do this again. I felt the tears coming down my face now and I didn’t even care who saw me anymore. I reached up and grabbed his hand again and squeezed.

“Come back to me.” That was all I could say because either way it was not up to me. It was up to him, if he wanted to be saved.
