Chapter Seven

Kiss: Sounds of Earth

“Are you sure about this?” I asked Maurice as he pulled into the Neumos parking lot. “You haven’t played anywhere in, what, a couple of years?”

“I’ve played.”

“You’ve played?”

“Been playing. Never stopped.”

My jaw drops. “Honestly?” We didn’t know. We had no clue. He didn’t live at home, but still.

“Everyone doesn’t need to know everything about you.” He turned his engine off.

“What’s your long-term plan here?” We both understood what I meant. I meant Dad.

“No idea yet. You don’t need to know everything about yourself every minute, either,” he said. “Come on.”

There were already a lot of cars in the parking lot.

There was a jazzed feeling all around, excitement.

Maybe those people were really looking forward to seeing Solar Flare, or maybe this was how it always was before a performance at a club.

I had no idea. I’d never even been to many concerts at all, let alone to a club.

I’d gone with my parents to see the Cars Reunion Band when I was, like, twelve, and I saw Maurice play in his old band, Irv and the Irks, once, with my brothers at a brewery, and I Severin Gyles was.

A song that the crowd absolutely recognized.

Oh my God, it was called “Seeing You, Seeing Me.” Severin Gyles’s nod had a whole new meaning.
