Epilogue
“Colton, I don’t want to alarm you, but there’s a very large rat in our bathroom!” Her voice is trembling, and I try my best to keep a straight face.
“It’s okay, baby, show me.” I know exactly what she’s on about, it’s the same thing Logan called him when he dropped it off before Hallie and him went on their late honeymoon. Margo takes my hand and baby steps toward the toilet downstairs; I feel a laugh bubbling in my chest, so I bite my lip. Cue the theatrics …
We stop in front of the bathroom door, and she goes to open it, then pauses. “You do it.”
Snorting, I slowly open the door just enough to pop my head in and look inside. “Baby, get me a bat!”
She cries an “Oh good lord” and panics behind me.
“Pearl, the bat,” I repeat.
She’s in full-on panic mode now panting as she searches our apartment for a bat that she won’t find; we don’t have one.
“Colton there’s no bat! What should we do.”
“We will have to kill it with our bare hands, baby.” I tease, and she comes into my view her hair a mess from running her hands through it. Her cheeks are pink and her breaths heavy.
“You monster, we cannot kill it.”
I laugh. “But, Margo, you were the one searching for a bat.” I raise a brow, and there’s a pawing at the door. Margo jumps back, her hand flying to her chest. I swing open the door, letting him out, and he pounces for Margo. She screams, and I laugh so hard.
“Colton, save me!”
I laugh even harder. “Come on, Milo, let’s leave Margo be for a bit. Let her get used to you!” I say while shooing him away from her.
“Milo?” she asks, still shaking from the licking Milo gave her on her cheeks.
“It’s a sphynx cat, it’s Hallie and Logan’s. We”re babysitting it while they are away.” Strutting past her, I pick Milo up and head for the kitchen.
“But they”re away for three weeks, Colton,” she whines.
“In three weeks, you’re gonna be begging to keep Milo, you’ll see, baby.” I pat Milo on the head and smile to myself. Maybe we should get a cat.
“Oh, hell no, I ain’t gonna be friends with that rat. I’m a dog person, Colton, a dog person!”
A surprise cat it is.
The End.
