Chapter Twenty-Three
We stood in front of the crackling hearth just before sunset on the solstice. The air was heavy, loaded with our final moments together here on Earth.
She stared at the flames. “I think it would be absurd to not be a little nervous about this. It’s technically suicide. And listen, I’m not one of those toxic people who thinks suicide is selfish or an easy way out. But I guess I’m worried I’ll end up somewhere I’m not supposed to be.”
“It will be a sacrifice, my love. But I promise it will not be terrifying. You will be in a trance. It will be like the last serene moments before falling asleep.” I squeezed her hand.
“I trust you.”
“I will guide your soul to the Otherworld.” With my promise, I anointed her with sap from my forever tree I’d collected in a hollowed-out acorn. First over her heart, across the tips of each breasts, and over her womb. Her eyes were almost unfocused, her lips open in a neutral hold. Seeing her calm and sure of her decision urged me to continue on with my plans. “For each child we have in the Otherworld, a pine will sprout in this realm.”
A wistful look relaxed her face even further. “Is that really how it happens?”
“Of course.” I presented a crown I’d made with dainty, small antlers that were interlocked on their sides, along with holly and pine. “This is for you, my queen.”
As she stood naked before me, I wrapped her in the softest skins I had, then whisked her up into my arms to carry her like a bride out of the cabin. Her warm eyes darted around the home.
“Any final requests?” I asked.
“No. I’m going to miss this place.” Her eyes met mine. “It’s where we fell in love.”
I clutched her tighter. “I promise where we are going will be even better. You have my word.”
A timid smile curved her mouth. “I believe you.” Her fingers grasped at my hair, combing my wild curls. “Take me to your realm, Dianus. I’m ready.” She stole a quick kiss before returning her doe-eyed gaze to mine. “I’m ready to love you forever.”
