“ I can’t believe we managed to put this all together so quickly.” I meet my mom’s eyes in the mirror, noticing that they’re threatening to spill over again, just like mine are. She wipes a tear away and then runs her eyes over the wedding dress that she’d bought, knowing it was the perfect one when I was too busy second-guessing it. I usually wear jeans and hoodies. I don’t mind dressing up, but unlike my cousin Natalya, dresses and heels aren’t my go-to outfit. I look down at the delicate beadwork and feminine lace that covers my chest and arms. It’s gorgeous, and it makes me feel beautiful to wear it.

“Val’s going to lose his mind when he sees you,” she teases while adjusting the crystal combs in my hair that the long veil is attached to. “I bet he’s been imagining this moment since you were kids.”
