O n the long drive back to Vancouver, the road stretches ahead like a chasm between what I had in Paradise and the emptiness waiting at home. It’s only when I reach the familiar outline of the Vancouver suburbs that a different kind of panic sets in. I left my phone at my mother’s when I stopped to say goodbye.
