The doctors said Philip had a year, three at best with chemotherapy. The cancer had progressed into his lymph nodes, and though the thoracotomy had been successful in removing the diseased lung tissue, he’d likely need the whole lung removed down the line.

Marigold stayed in the hospital with her family, speaking to the doctors and comforting her mother and sisters. She had initially planned to only stay home through the weekend, but the day Philip regained consciousness, she quietly submitted her request to the dean for a leave of absence.
