I don’t know whose blood is on my sweater. I pull it off with trembling hands and drop it to the kitchen floor. My feet feel weird, my whole body feels weird, but I manage to kick off my shoes. Pain is the clearest thing to me right now. The side of my head throbs from where that man clubbed me.

I turn the faucet as cold as possible and put my head under it. Frigid water flows into my hair and down my face. I gasp at the shock of it, but I don’t move. Beneath the ice-cold water, the pain recedes and my awareness sharpens.

I hear footsteps running toward me from the elevator, and I panic. Brady cannot see me like this. I shut off the faucet and whip upright as he rounds the corner.
