The next week is a whirlwind. Our mom stops by often to check on us—and to drop off more pillows and blankets, a little care package for Mercedes and her upcoming heat. We told her all about what happened, so she’s aware Mercedes is about to go through a second heat in what must be a record amount of time.

Jay and his crew have been dealt with. Alabaster Security works closely with the police, and the information that we provided them—information regarding an underground dealer of a heat-inducing drug—was enough for them to look the other way when it came to the not-so-legal actions our company may or may not have taken.

Once the cravings start, it’s all hands on deck. Though our mom wants to stick around and help, we need to show Mercedes we can handle it on our side, so we kick her out of the house and tell her to go home. Lovingly, of course.

I do my best to cook every meal for her, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. All three of us took off work, and we won’t go back until after her heat is done and we’re certain she’s all right. Mercedes, for her part, does what she can to remain calm, but there are a few incidents where she lets her emotions get the better of her.
