Chapter 48

48

HANNAH

The dead body was gone from the parking garage. Everything looked boring and normal. It was as if the whole assassin thing hadn’t happened a few hours earlier. Although an assassin in my mind was a cross between James Bond and a ninja, not smelly, overweight mafiosi.

Brittany parked Dr. Todd’s minivan in the visitor’s spot, and I hesitantly climbed out. I’d probably have PTSD about the assault later, but I still took a few seconds now to look around and make sure there weren’t any bad guys skulking behind concrete pillars.

Brittany didn’t seem scared, although she hadn’t dealt with not one, but two brushes with death today.

“That’s his car,” I said, pointing to the SUV.

“And that’s mine that I want back one of these days.” Brittany tipped her head toward her way-nicer-than-mine car that I borrowed in a visitor’s spot. Its return wasn’t high on my list right now.

I wanted Jack to be the man I’d fallen for over the past week, the one who seemed to crave me. Not the irrational man from earlier.

“Mr. Hitman drives a Maserati?” she asked.

I nodded.

“The best paying jobs aren’t talked about with college counselors,” she muttered.

She could find all this funny.

Me? Not so much. I was mad at Jack. Really mad.

And he’d put me in danger.

And he didn’t believe me.

And… there were a lot of ands.

Yet, here I was, ready to return to him with the hope that he’d keep me safe.

I took a deep breath and made my way toward the bank of elevators when one of them dinged and the doors slid open.

Out came Jack and Dax.

Jack stopped for the briefest of moments, eyes intent on me. In a split second, he took me in from head to toe. The fierce look on his face had me swallowing because no matter how mad at him I might be, I wasn’t immune. Then his long legs ate up the distance between us. “Don’t you fucking disappear,” he growled as his arms banded about me with a familiar crackle of static electricity. Then was kissing me.

I gasped and he took advantage, his tongue finding mine .

I wasn’t sure if my feet were off the ground or if the kiss was that good.

Brittany and Dax began a conversation I barely noticed. Because… kissing.

“I’m Brittany, the best friend.”

“I’m Dax, the other best friend. I, um, guess we’re not needed here.”

“Yeah, be sure to tell Jack that if he fucks up again, I’ll anesthetize him and pull out all his teeth.”

“Gruesome. I like it.”

Jack, completely ignoring our friends and their chatter, angled his head and took the kiss deeper. Took more. It was completely unrestrained. Then heavy doors slid closed, and all was silent. How had we gotten to the elevator?
