Chapter 49

49

JACK

Once we made it to my apartment, I ensured the elevator remained locked so no one could call it, pretty much locking my front door. Eyebrows had known he couldn’t get to me anywhere else in the building but the parking garage. Besides it being a twenty-floor climb, the emergency stairs were well secured. There was no way into my fortress in the sky.

Maybe I should have brought Hannah up here earlier after Eyebrows’ attempt, but I’d wanted to take Hannah somewhere secret where I could interrogate her. Someplace neutral. Someplace impersonal. Fuck, interrogate Hannah. I wanted to punch myself.

Sal would need time to regroup. With Eyebrows dead, Sal’s interest in my death was no longer a secret. Any attempts on my life wouldn’t come as a surprise.

I’d be ready .

But I’d rather be taken out by any of his men than to let Hannah keep thinking I still didn’t believe her. Maybe what she’d done, the disappearing act, was some kind of an act of faith, where I had to know what we shared was unconditional. That whatever she threw at me–figuratively, but also perhaps literally–I could handle and would stand by her side.

She’d stood by me, and I’d kidnapped her and interrogated her.

Accepting that she could up and disappear on me meant that while I was confident no one was going to get in, I couldn’t guarantee that she wouldn’t get out before I made things right.

So I broke the kiss and yanked at the hem of her shirt and pushed it up her torso.

“What are you doing?” she asked. Her arms went up to help, giving me unsaid consent.

“Making sure you won’t do that disappearing act again.” I flicked open the back of her bra.

Fuck, would I ever not get rock hard seeing her perfect tits? I wanted to lean down and suck one pink tip into my mouth.

“How is this going to stop it?” Her voice was breathless, and she wiggled her hips to help me get her pants down. I dropped to my knees to work them down to her ankles.

“I have a feeling if you wanted to, you could do it again. But I doubt you’re going to want to end up somewhere naked.”

She’d kicked one sandal off and stalled, the other one dangling from her toes. Stared at me, as if the idea never occurred to her .

She nodded. “You’re right.”

“Joey Brains tried to kill you.” I stated it as fact, not a question. I believed her and I was telling her as much. “Are you okay?”

She nodded. “Yeah. I threw scissors at him. Got him good enough he might have needed a few stitches in his chest.”

“That’s a good girl.”

She took a shaky breath. “That… that made him mad, and he started to strangle me.”

Then she burst into tears.

He. Was. A. Dead. Man.
