Chapter 20

Kate

“I can walk Legacy.” I slapped his hands away and forced myself up and out of the car with more effort than I should have. My body ached, even though after a week in the hospital and surgery to put pins in my badly broken arm, I was more than ready to get out of bed and back on with my life.

I missed Conner, even though I had seen him several times. Legacy’s sister, Elodie, had been watching over him. She was one of the nicest people I had met, and down to earth for a woman who was married to a sex god (if you believed everything posted about him on social media).

Not that I was jealous; I had my own sex god.

The hand I had slapped him away with closed around his wrist, and I pulled him into me, almost knocking us both back into the passenger side of the car.

He caught me around the waist just in time, keeping me secure against him without pressing against my broken ribs.

Looking up at him, I couldn’t help but smile. He grinned back. His eyes danced across my face.

“I know you can walk, Kate.” He leant his head into mine. “But that doesn’t mean I want you to. Let me look after you.”

Looping my one good arm around his waist, I reached up on tiptoes. “You have been looking after me.”

And he had. He hadn’t left my side. I hadn’t been with it when he had crawled into the back of that van and found me. But I had known he was there. Through the pain and the delirium, I had felt him close by. I’d been told later that it was Domino and Pocket who had broken the back door open so the paramedics could get to me. The rest was a blur until after I had woken up with my arm in a cast up past my elbow and my body one big ball of ache.

“Thank you for finding me.”

He actually blushed. “Baby, I almost didn’t get to you in time. I almost lost you.” For a second, he squeezed me. I blew out a hissing breath in pain.

“He doing the squeezing thing again?” From his position leaning against the entryway, Domino grinned.

“Yep.” I couldn’t help but laugh. Domino used to scare me, but not anymore. He was a decent guy. A little old school, but he was solid for the people he cared about.

And Legacy had told me he had a soft spot for girls who needed help.

“Put the poor girl down, Legacy. Everyone is waiting for her.”

Waiting for me? I frowned up at him and he grinned. Legacy was up to something, but I didn’t have long to find out what.

Conner appeared out of the doorway behind Domino. “Surprise!” Bounding towards me, he launched himself, knocking the air from my lungs. It was only Legacy’s solid frame that stopped me from going down.

“I’ve missed you so much. Are you really okay?”

“She will be if you let go of her,” Legacy said, but I hushed him with a look.

A little momentary pain was nothing. I needed to hold Conner. He was my son. Maybe not by blood, but in all the ways that mattered. I hugged him back tightly.

“I’ve missed you too.”

“You just wait to see who is here. You won’t believe how big their house is or who just pops over to visit,” he rambled on.

“You can tell me all about it, I promise…” I trailed off, my lips falling open as Elodie’s husband stepped outside. “That’s Jax Turner.” I whistled.

“Oh, no you don’t.” Plucking me out of Conner’s arms and pressing my face into his chest, Legacy laughed.

“No, I don’t what?”

“Get all star-struck over that asshole. Do you know once he punched me in the face?”

Laughing, I forced my head back. “He did, why?”

“He thought I was someone El was dating.” Legacy winked. The similarities weren’t lost on me. I had thought the exact same thing when I had first met Elodie.

“I’m not getting star-struck, Legacy. There’s only one man for me.”

He cocked an eyebrow. “Oh, and who is that?”

“Pocket.” I giggled.

“Woman!” Legacy roared, slapping me firmly on the ass. “Get your behind in there before I forget you”re injured and I make you remember who you belong to.”
