Chapter 21
Everyone meant well, but the constant stream of people coming to talk to me and hug me was exhausting.
All I wanted was to lie down and take some of the pain medication the doctors had given me.
Legacy’s voice sounded moments after the thought occurred to me.
“Hey, I’m going to take Kate to rest.”
Shaking myself, I smiled up at him. I hadn’t had to say anything, he just knew.
“Are we going home?” From the pool table near to where I was sitting, Conner lifted his head. “Already?”
Before I could say anything, Legacy’s sister laughed. “You want to hang out with me and Jax for one more night, Conner?”
He chewed on his lip and didn’t say a word. I could clearly see the uncertainty on his face. “I don’t know. Kate?”
“You can hang out with Elodie and Jax. I don’t mind,” I said softly. “We can catch up tomorrow.”
Conner’s brow furrowed, and his eyes were troubled. It was only then that I realised how much he was struggling. He was doing a good job of hiding it, but Conner was worried. Worried about me and the fact that the Hunter brothers were still out there. I was worried about that as well, even though I didn’t want to admit it.
“Do you promise?” He sounded so young and afraid that I reached out to him, pulling him into my arms for a hug. “I promise, Conner.” Tears made my voice thick as I smoothed back his blond hair. He was so young still and sometimes I forgot that. “It’s always going to be me and you, Conner. Us against the world.”
He sobbed into my shoulder, letting his emotions take over. I cried with him. I didn’t care that people were staring. All I cared about was comforting my son.
“Me and you.” Finally, he pulled himself away. Wiping the tears from his face with his sleeve, he blushed. He was embarrassed that he had broken down in front of the Savage Sons. “And Legacy,” he added.
My eyes danced towards the biker at my side. He was watching intently. Legacy, my dead husband”s best friend and now my lover.
No, not my lover. The man I was in love with. There was a difference. And it was an important one.
“And Legacy,” I said softly. “The three of us.”
Reaching out, Legacy brought my hand to his lips and echoed my words. “The three of us.”
