Chapter forty

Mako

The hope you drop creates ripples that are more powerful than all the world’s waves- Mathew ‘Mako’ Fate

Tyr stands on my left and Digs on my right. We’re waiting in the tree line, watching our omegas who are sitting side-by-side on the sand.

“Do you think she’s going to forgive us?”

I inhale sharply. “I hope so.”

Still, my nerves won’t let me move towards them.

I can feel Envy’s amusement through the bond, mocking us for the cowards that we are.

I take a deep breath, inflating my lungs with salt-infused air. The moon is full, and the ocean is black silk glittering with star light. Our omegas scents are in the air, thick and heavy.

The fact that Envy is wearing his scent in public, even if it is a deserted beach, could almost bring me to tears. I don’t know how or when he learned to turn his omega off, but the constant touching and rubbing on us created a blend of alpha musk that effectively hid him.

Even from our omega.

Was it wrong?

Only in that we should have told her the night we met her. Or any day thereafter. Definitely during her heat.

I still have horrible memories of her heat. I never ever want to do that again .

Forcing myself to move is nearly impossible, but I manage the first step. Will she forgive us? Will she talk to us? Even though she has a bond now, I’m still not certain of our reception.

I’ve never been this nervous before.

As we approach, I force my concern away and throw up one of my smiles. She must hear us because she turns and scrambles to her feet.

All she’s wearing is Envy’s top, but she’s never looked more beautiful.

I do the only thing I can think of doing. I fall to my knees.

“I am so, so sorry for hurting you.”

She bites her lower lip and shuffles from foot to foot. The tension wafting off her turns the air thick.

Envy stands up but flanks her, watching us with an expressionless face. He will stand with her now, no matter what happens.

Desperation has me staring at her, watching for any micro expression on her moonlit face.

In paradise, don’t you get second chances? Aren’t you meant to fall in love again?

“Fish, please. We got so lost in protecting Envy that we forgot we weren’t alone. You trusted us with your secret, and we should have trusted you. We should have found a way to tell you what was happening. With everything.”

I shake my head, trying to dispel the memories. She’s watching me even closer. I try to keep the smile, but it drops off my face, and she gets to see the full front of my despair. All my feelings. I’m raw and exposed. She is seeing me.

I’m the alpha without parents. I’m only smiling with our pack or on stage. My sister and my pack are everything to me. I love the feeling of having a crowd scream at us. But more than anything, I love this omega and I have since the first lyrics left her mouth in that hotel room years ago. It was instant. It was terrifying.

Resisting her has been the war of my life, and I can’t fight anymore. I’m done.

I need her.

I need to be able to be close to her in whatever way she will take me.

She flickers her gaze between the three of us.

“We are sorry, Aura,” Digs says. “So sorry, we will be sorry forever.”

She takes a step, and I hold my breath, waiting, but then she closes the distance, her arms wrapping around my head and drawing me to her.

My heart feels like it’s going to burst out of my chest as I slowly lift my arms to encircle the back of her thighs .

“I’m going to forgive you because I don’t want to live a half life. I want to do this with a clean slate. You, me, and them,” Ryn says. “So, Mako, no more lies. No more secrets. This is our new start.”

I nod my head against her stomach, drowning in the scent of coconut.

“Anything you want.”

She strokes my hair, and when she tries to pull away; I let out a distressed sound and hold her tighter.

She laughs. “I need to speak to the others.”

“No, mine.”

Tyr snorts and presses up against me, pulling her to him. I’m right in the middle of them, and I don’t care. I’m not letting go. Digs joins from the other side.

I’m not moving.

No one can make me.

“I want your bonds,” my omega says into the companionable quiet that has sprung up.

“When?” I hear Digs ask.

“As soon as possible,” Ryn says.

It’s music to my ears.
