Ainsley

4 months later

Spencer and I had spent the last four months working through what we’d lost. It had taken me a while to realize that it was nothing I had done. Doctor Pines had gotten the results back from the tissue samples she’d sent to the lab, and they confirmed it was a genetic abnormality that caused the miscarriage. Having that answer, along with an amazing therapist helped me to cope. Having Spencer at my side the entire time helped even more. We’d both taken time off from work, Max stepping up and running both sides of things for a bit while we worked through everything, including our relationship with my father.

During this time, Spencer had also dealt with Brittany. She’d appeared at our home to pick Nikki up, a month after we’d lost the baby, and spewed some horrible, hateful words at me. Then she’d taken Nikki back home with her. Two days later, we’d gotten a call from Brittany’s neighbour who had noticed she hadn’t been home but knew Nikki had been staying there. She’d left Nikki unattended for two days. Immediately, Spencer called his lawyer, and they awarded us immediate custody. Then we had a restraining order placed against her.

Nikki danced around the living room wearing her little flower girl dress as Carly and I watched her, laughing at her silliness.

“, what flowers am I getting?” she asked.

I smiled. “Well, I am not sure what they will have. It might look something like this,” I said, turning my laptop around for her to see one image from another person’s wedding. The flower girl was carrying hibiscus flowers.

“Oh, those are pretty. Can we plant those in the backyard?” she asked.

“I don’t know if those will grow well here, sweetie,” I said, kissing her forehead. “We need to get you out of this dress though.”

“Oh, but it’s soooo pretty,” she said, doing another spin.

“Come on, Nikki, let’s get you changed, and then we can see in her dress,” Carly said, guiding her down the hall to her room.

I let out my breath, the flutters of nerves hitting my stomach. I looked at the bag that hung on the back of the walk-in closet door. I hadn’t looked at this dress since I’d picked it up after the alterations had been done. I walked over and lowered the zipper. I looked at the beautiful dress I’d chosen almost six months ago and slipped the straps off the hanger. I worried about the weight I’d lost. It had been a struggle for a while to eat after I’d lost the baby. I had worked hard but I wasn’t sure I’d gained enough back for the dress to fit any longer. I took off my shirt and my jeans and stepped into the dress and was surprised when it slid on like a glove. I reached behind me and raised the zipper as far as I could until I saw Carly standing in the door.

“Can you help me?”

“Wow, , you look gorgeous,” she said, coming over and raising the zipper the rest of the way. I turned around and looked at my friend, who, for the first time, had tears in her eyes because of something like this. “Spencer is going to bust when he sees you,” she cried, straightening the lower part of the dress so that it hung straight.

“You think?” I smiled, looking at my reflection in the mirror.

“Wow, , you are sooo pretty!” Nikki cried with excitement as she covered her mouth with her little hands.

“Isn’t she though,” Carly said, standing up and giving me another onceover.

We stood there for a moment, admiring my dress, when we heard a car door slam outside. I looked at Carly, my eyes bugging out of my head as panic filled me. “Is that Spencer?” I asked. I’d hidden the bag in the back of the closet, and we’d gone this long without him seeing it. I didn’t want to ruin the surprise because he walked in after a long day at work to find me standing in it.

Carly ran over to the window and looked out, breathing a sigh of relief. “It’s Jane.” She giggled and ran down the hall to open the front door.

Moments later, Carly returned with Jane. One look at me and she smiled. “Goodness, , you’re breathtaking,” she said, coming over and shoving my long hair off my shoulders.

“Thank you.”

“Just wait until your father sees you in this dress. I think it might make him cry.” She laughed.

I gave myself another look in the mirror and glanced at the clock. “Can you guys please help me out of this dress before Spencer gets here?”

“Of course,” Carly said, coming behind me and unzipping the zipper, while Jane stood in front of me, taking the straps so the dress didn’t fall to the floor. Together, they hung it back in the bag and zipped it up, slipping it behind the bag that held Spencer’s suit while I got dressed.

“Everyone have their passports?” I questioned.

“Yes, your fathers just came in today,” Jane said. “We were getting worried, but I got a notice from the post office. I just got it before I came here.”

“I’m home,” I heard Spencer call from the hallway. “Is it safe to come in?”

The three of us laughed. “Yes, of course,” I called, throwing my T-shirt over my head.

Spencer rounded the corner, carrying a small bag and his laptop bag, and set them both in the corner. “Are we having a party?” he asked, looked from me to Carly to Jane.

“Just here, helping make sure everything is ready for tomorrow,” Carly sang.

“And is it?” Spencer asked.

The three of us smiled, and I nodded my head. “Yes. Now, what is in that bag?” I questioned, curiosity getting the best of me.

“That,” Spencer said, nodding to the bag, “is for our wedding night.” He placed a kiss on my lips.

I felt my cheeks flush as Carly and Jane watched the exchange between us.

“Ohhh, what is it?” Nikki asked, running over to grab the bag, but Spencer grabbed it first, picking it up and placing it on the top of our dresser.

“It’s not for a little person’s eyes,” Spencer said, grabbing her and throwing her over his shoulder. She let out a loud laugh as he tickled her before he placed her back down on the ground.

“I’m going to hit the shower and then get packed,” Spencer said, heading to our ensuite shutting the door behind him.

Carly, Jane, Nikki, and I headed to the kitchen, where we sat down at the table to go over all the information for the trip. Spencer and I were to be married two days after we arrived, then we would be whisked away to a private part of the resort to spend our honeymoon, while the rest of the guests partied the week away.

“You’re sure you’ll be fine to watch Nikki?” I asked Carly.

“Of course. It’s only for the wedding night, right?”

I nodded. “Yes.”

“We can help too,” Jane said. “We’d be happy to.”

I smiled. “Thank you.”

Things between my father and I, and Spencer and him, had changed in the days that followed the miscarriage. My father had been the rock that Spencer had needed, and he’d been there for me when I needed him as well. We’d had all the support we both needed, perhaps more. It was a welcome change, and soon Dad and Jane were visiting us more at the new place than they did when we lived next door.

“All right, who the hell is ready to party?” I asked, throwing my book to the side. I’d gone over and over all these plans for the last three months, to where there was really nothing left to plan.

“Yes!” Jane said, throwing her arms up in excitement.

Carly let out a laugh as she pulled Nikki close to her.

“I should get home. Your father will be home any minute, and I’ve got to get dinner ready and finish packing.”

“Oh, me too,” Carly said, jumping up out of her seat.

“Don’t forget your dress,” I said, running down the hall and grabbing her bridesmaid dress from the closet.

“I won’t, don’t worry. I also can’t wait to meet Spencer’s brother. You said he was single, right?” Carly asked, taking the dress from me.

I rolled my eyes and giggled. “Don’t start.”
