Chapter 35
Chapter 36
Nothing. Two weeks now and nothing to show for it.
The police identified the remains found at Riley’s as Jordyn Ellis, a twenty-year-old reported missing from Fairfax three months ago. Jax and I have concluded she helped whoever took Riley before ultimately being killed and left in Riley’s bed when the fire started to make it look like Riley was the one who burned.
Little other progress has been made on their front, short of a nationwide missing person’s alert and local search. Sheriff Miller has been more than gracious in his communication with us, but I’ve stopped answering his calls, directing them to Jax instead. The lack of progress with each update has become unbearable to listen to.
Vin still hasn’t made any contact. I’ve texted him a dozen times the last couple of days with no response, and I’m at my wit”s end.
Jax had our tech guy dig into the security footage to see if he could trace who hacked it, but whoever it was had done a hell of a job covering their tracks. He’s found nothing so far.
I pull my car into the driveway of a little rundown house in the middle of nowhere. Smoke billows from the chimney, the scent of burning wood filling my nostrils.
It’s a freezing, cloud covered day, the wind whipping through the air and cutting your skin like a blade. A few inches of snow cover the ground now, and as I get out of the car, it crunches against my shoes.
This is the tenth house I’ve visited today. I’ve resorted to knocking on doors all around Riley’s place, asking if anyone has seen her or anyone suspicious in the area, trying to piece together who may have taken her. So far, nothing.
Two weeks and nothing.
