Prologue

Thirteen Years Ago

“Sebbie? Are you in here?” I knocked before walking into my brother’s room.

It was empty.

Looking around, his room felt cold, almost as if he had never been there. His dresser drawers were open. Sebbie wasn’t messy like this. Sebbie always kept a clean room.

Moving deeper into his room, I noticed his closet door open. Peeking inside, I saw the empty hangers. Everything was gone.

Where was Sebbie?

Running to Preston’s room, I barged in without knocking.

“Ellie, what the fuck?”

“What are you doing? Why aren’t you dressed?” I asked, confused.

“Get the fuck out, Ellie,” my oldest brother yelled.

“Why is Bianca in here? Where is Sebbie?”

“I don’t fucking know, Ellie. GET. OUT.”

I backed out of Preston’s room, pulling the door closed. Bianca was Sebbie’s girl. Why was she with Preston?

Oh my God. Were they having sex? But she was Sebbie’s girl, not Preston’s. It didn’t make sense.

Rushing to Daddy’s office, I skidded to a stop and knocked first this time. Having learned my lesson moments ago, because there was no way I wanted to see Mama and Daddy…that’s just ew! Standing there, I waited impatiently for Daddy to answer when I heard him say, “Come in.”

Pushing the door open, I blurted out, “Daddy, where’s Sebbie? Did he go on a trip?”

“What, honey?”

“Sebbie, where is he?” I asked again.

Never looking up from his computer, he muttered absentmindedly, “I don’t know, honey. Your brothers are always off somewhere. Maybe he’s with Bianca.”

“Bianca’s with Preston,” I said.

“What?” Daddy looked up then.

“Bianca is with Preston in his room,” I tattled.

“God damn that boy.” Daddy stood from his seat and stomped out of his office toward the stairs.

I wasn’t waiting around for the screaming. Maybe Mama knew where he was. Hurrying to her office, I knocked on her door and opened it.

“Mama?” I called out when I heard Daddy shouting from the hallway. I turned just in time to see Bianca running down the stairs, crying. My brother Preston followed as he quickly threw on a shirt, chasing after her, while Daddy stood at the railing, yelling at both of them.

Bianca saw me standing near the doorway to Mama’s office and spat at me. “You stupid little bitch. You couldn’t keep your damn mouth shut, could you?”

I backed up against the door as she marched toward me when I heard Daddy shout.

“Bianca!”

She stopped and looked up at him.

“Get. Out.”

I looked up at Daddy. He was mad, like Preston was when I barged into his room.

“Bianca, I’ll fix this,” Preston told her.

“Forget it, Pres. Too late now. You can thank your sister for everything that is about to happen. You had your chance to stop it,” she said cryptically.

Preston spun around and snarled at me. “What the fuck did you do?”

“I didn’t do anything. I was looking for Sebbie,” I cried.

“You’ve ruined everything, you little brat,” my brother snapped as he walked back up the stairs to Daddy. Together they stood there arguing with each other. Preston’s arms flailing, and Daddy’s face getting redder by the minute.

I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but I guessed it wasn’t good.

“Ellery? What is going on?” Mama asked, walking toward me.

I ran over to her and threw my arms around her waist.

“I didn’t do anything wrong. I was just looking for Sebbie.”

“Where is Sebastian?” Mama asked.

“I don’t know. His room is a mess and some of his clothes are gone. I think he left, Mama,” I cried into her chest.

“Nonsense. Sebastian wouldn’t leave without telling us.”

She pulled me away from her and looked upstairs at Preston and Daddy. “Bill? What’s going on?”

“Preston had Bianca in his room,” Daddy informed her.

“WHAT?” Mama shrieked.

She let go of me so fast, my back slammed into the wall as she rushed up the stairs and focused all her attention on Preston.

“What have you done?”

“I didn’t have a choice,” he explained. “Everything would have been fine if Ellie had stayed out of my room.”

“I just wanted to find Sebbie,” I cried, sinking to the floor.

If Sebbie were here, he would fix it. Whatever it was.

“Where are you Sebbie?” I whispered.
