CHAPTER 20
CAINE
I wake up and find that Max isn’t next to me anymore. I react quickly, jumping out of bed, needing to find her. I immediately worry that she’s gone again. That she ran off or was taken. I need to see her. I need to keep my eyes on her at all times.
Racing out of the room, I look around until I see the flash of red hair outside sitting on the bench with Adam. I breathe out a sigh of relief, but also annoyance because she should be in bed with me right now, not outside with him.
I push the sliding glass door open and they both look back at me. The cold air hitting my bare chest doesn’t even phase me.
“What’re you doing?” I ask her.
“Talking,” she answers, simply.
“Well, you should be in bed. With me.”
“Come on, it’s cold we should go inside anyway,” Adam tells her, standing up and I see their clasped hands as he pulls her up to follow. They walk past me, but I wrap my arm around Max’s waist to pull her away from Adam and back into me.
“You’ve been away from me for too long, killer and I’m going to need a taste of your sweet pussy soon. I’ve missed it. And I know she’s missed me too.”
Her sharp intake of breath is all the answer I need, and I surge my hips against her, letting her feel my already hardening cock that’s been dying for her.
“You wish,” she sasses.
I chuckle darkly. “You can deny it all you want. Your body doesn’t lie, but if you don’t want to admit it that’s fine. I know exactly how to get what I want. And you love it every time.”
She turns her head slightly, bringing our faces close together. “And I know how to drive you crazy by fucking Drew or Adam in front of you. Maybe both, and you can’t do a damn thing about it.”
“Try it, killer. See what happens.”
I let her go and she stumbles slightly, walking inside. I follow after her, and when we’re back in my bed, I make sure to pull her against me tightly so she knows she’s not getting away without me knowing again.
Adam doesn’t want to go to Uncaged in the morning, but Max insists that we all get back to our normal routine assuring us that she’s really okay.
“I need to go see if I can get my job back.” She sighs, like she just realized that was something she’ll have to do.
“We talked to George, he’ll take you back no problem,” I explain.
“Or, you could come work at Uncaged,” Adam offers easily.
“And do what? I’m not a coach.”
“No, but you can help with admin tasks, I’ve needed someone working the front desk,” he tells her, though I’m pretty sure it’s a lie.
“I don’t know, I like working at the bar. It’s nice to get away from you guys sometimes.” She smirks.
“Excuse me,” Drew growls, grabbing her from behind and burying his face into her neck. “You’re never getting away from us.”
She chuckles, haphazardly trying to push him away.
“Well, you two have fun today. I’ll make sure to keep Max entertained.” I smirk at her.
“You’re not training?” Adam asks in disbelief.
“Not today. I’m going to spend time with my girl and make sure she’s doing okay.” I look at her and the daggers she’s glaring at me.
“Right.” Adam looks at her. “Well guess I won’t look at any fights for you anytime soon, then.”
“Why?”
“If you’re not going to train then you’re not ready to get in the cage.”
“Don’t pull that bullshit with me,” I snap. “I’m always ready to go and you know that.”
“I can stay back today, too,” Drew offers.
“No,” I snap immediately and he narrows his eyes at me.
“I’m not sticking around just for you all to fight. I’m getting back to my life, and that starts with asking for my job back. So you guys can figure out your shit, on your own.” Max waves us off, walking back toward my room. That’s soon to be our room because she’s not getting any distance from us, no matter what she thinks.
I narrow my eyes at Drew and Adam.
“Someone does need to stay with her,” Adam agrees.
“Perfect, it’ll be me.” I nod.
“No, I think it should be me,” Drew volunteers.
“Why?” I snap.
“Because Adam has classes covered, and you need to train.” I see the subtle smirk on his face. He knows exactly what he’s doing.
“That actually would make the most sense,” Adam says easily.
Max comes out from the bedroom, wearing one of my T-shirts and sweatpants that are way too big on her. I’m not even sure how she has them staying up on her hips. But seeing her in my clothes makes me feral. I’m about to take her right here, right now.
“Which one of your motorcycles can I steal?” She smiles widely at me and I shake my head, remembering the night she showed up threatening to do just that. Though, the darkness that lingers over that memory is strong seeing as that was the beginning of the end before she was taken from us.
“You want to go to The Tavern and talk to George?” Drew clarifies.
Max nods in his direction.
“I’ll take you. These two have things to do today.” He gives me a sideways glance and I clench my fist.
“Sounds good, see you guys later.” She walks to the front door, and I don’t question the fact that she’ll be trying to get her job back wearing clothes that are five times too big for her. If George denies her, it doesn’t matter to us.
Drew follows after her without even looking back at us. Once they’re outside I turn to Adam. “We will spar one time and if I win then you don’t give me shit about skipping training.”
He scoffs, “We’ll see about that.”
Adam has me spar with Cal because I think he’s worried about fighting me. It would be embarrassing to lose as the coach. Of course, I win the impromptu fight with Cal easily. Afterwards, I check my phone afterwards to make sure Drew hasn’t said anything.
What I find is much worse and makes me feel like I’m going to need to get into the cage again. Or at least hit the bag for a bit.
There’s a text from my dad, demanding that I call him. It’s the last thing I want to do, but when I also see the one from my brother that has a screenshot of the news reporting Carson’s death, I know there’s going to be a problem.
I look up the news article myself to make sure Max isn’t mentioned. When I see that all it says is that the investigation is ongoing, I breathe out a small sigh of relief. They won’t find anything that leads the murder back to her, but unfortunately my family knows something is up.
“Fuck,” I mumble to myself.
I dial my dad, pressing the phone to my ear, already irritated.
“Don’t say anything other than yes or no,” he says immediately and I know what he’s asking without him saying it. Did I do it?
I don’t say anything.
“Goddammit, Caine,” he grumbles. “We aren’t talking about this on the phone. Come home.”
“No,” I state firmly.
“If you don’t, then I’m coming there.”
“Don’t bother.”
“I’m not getting you out of fucking prison if you end up caught.”
“Good.” I hang up; I don’t want his help anyway. No matter what happens, we’re going to figure it out.
