20. Penny

I sighed as I leaned back in my chair at the Daily. Victoria had taken the reins on the first edition, and she was full steam ahead. Which I was grateful for. With my new relationship with Spencer blooming, I wanted to make sure that I found a balance with my work life and personal life.

After our kiss on the deck, we’d spent as much time together as we could. And it felt amazing.

I’d forgotten what it was like to care about someone and to have that person care about you.

I could hear Victoria typing feverishly in the other room. She was determined to get the final mockup done by today, so I could approve it, and we could send it to the printer. We hired Clementine to host a grand-opening party at her dance studio, and I’d been swamped with picking balloon colors, cake flavors, and party gifts .

Magnolia Daily was going to make a splash, and that thought left nervous butterflies assaulting my stomach.

Was it fair for me to be this happy?

The front doorbell chimed. I straightened when I heard Victoria greet Maggie.

I smiled as I stood, pushing my chair back so I could embrace my daughter when she came in.

“Good afternoon,” Maggie said as she crossed the room with a white box in her hands.

“You, too,” I said as I pulled her into a hug. I loved that physical affection was becoming normal between the two of us. Our relationship was blooming in a way that I could have only dreamed of in the past.

Maggie pulled back and handed me the box. “Lunch.”

I thanked her and set it down on my desk. “You’re so sweet.”

Maggie shrugged, and then a mischievous smile spread across her lips. “I also have news.”

“You’re pregnant.” I couldn’t stop myself. Ever since she told me that they might try, being a grandma had been all I could think about.

A look of pain crossed her face, and she shook her head. “No. Not yet.”

I hugged her again, but this time, she was less welcoming to it. “I’m so sorry.” I pretended to lock my lips. “I won’t say anything until you tell me I can.”

She gave me a thankful look before she moved to pull something out of her pocket. It was a small piece of paper. “ After you told me about Spencer and his daughters, I did a little social media digging.”

I frowned as I unfolded the paper. Two names and cities were written on it. “What’s this?”

She shrugged. “Children should know their parents,” she whispered.

My heart ached at her words. “They should.”

She waved to the handwriting. “These are his daughters. I think you should take a trip to see them.”

I swallowed. As much as I wanted to do this, it was still Spencer’s decision.

Maggie seemed to sense my hesitation. “Just think about it. And maybe float the idea?”

I nodded as I folded the paper back up and slipped it into my pocket. “Thanks for looking out for us, sweetie.”

Maggie smiled, and I opened the box of food she brought me. The smell of a roast beef sandwich and freshly fried chips wafted up, making my mouth water. I settled down on my chair as I picked up the food.

“So, tell me what’s going on at the inn.”

Maggie laughed as she sat down on the chair across from me. “Oh, do I have a story for you.”
