Chapter 11
R ennix
A few weeks later
I was finally back feeling like myself. I wasn’t in pain no more and the family wasn’t hovering.
My only problem was I had yet to find Juicy and her blood.
The names Kinga had given me had no movement.
Nine times out of ten motherfuckers were still moving around under different aliases, which made it hard.
I had their names flagged though, so if anything came up I’d get them.
Unlike my brothers, I was patient, and knew they would have to go back to their names just like I knew Juicy needed to make money.
Folks couldn’t hide for long, and when they came out, I’d see them.
It felt good to be back at my club, the sweet aroma of pastries filling the air while I knew ass was shaking a few feet away.
I was making money and once again moving toward another spot.
Well… I never stopped making money. I just wasn’t here to watch my shit be made.
Now I was back in the spot, all hands on deck, but why the fuck did I miss my baby?
My baby being Caya who I knew for sure should have been at her spot getting things packed up for her and Adonis’s move in with me.
That was only because I walked into her townhouse and lit a fire a few days ago.
“Have you lost your mind, Rennix?” Caya glared at me as I stood in the living room with a match in my hand.
“Nah, but I warned your pretty ass.”
“Rennix. You know I can’t just up and le—” Her words trailed off when I lit the match. “Rennix!”
“What? I’m hearing excuses. Let me get rid of them for you. Light this motherfucker on fire. It’s raining outside too. Let me set fire to that too, like ol’ girl said.”
“Rennix, stop playing with fire. I’ll figure it out soon, baby.”
That wasn’t good enough so I dropped the lit match on the carpet and she screamed my name louder than ever.
For a minute I stood there and watched it burn, until she threw water on it and put it out.
So I lit another. “It’s gonna take you much longer to keep going to get water if I keep lighting fires. Carpet is gonna be Dalmatian patterned.”
“Not if I throw the next cup of water on you and wet the matches in the process.”
I smiled , dick bricking up at the sight of her.
I had just come in from being with Rem and she was just natural.
Her hair was in a high messy bun, threatening to spill out.
On her body was a heather grey cami, letting me know she had no bra on.
Then on her bottom a pair of black biker shorts, hugging that ass of hers just right, showcasing those thick ass thighs and the gold elephant anklet that for some reason turned me on every time I saw it on her.
I was attracted to every fucking thing about Caya.
Nothing was ever too small or too big, everything with her did it for me.
If she changed her fucking earrings, I was bricked.
“You wanna test that theory, thug?”
She sighed. “No. Fine. I’ll call and schedule movers in the morning. Also don’t forget to put a couple dollars on the coffee table, you fucking maniac.”
I laughed and set the matches on the island before I approached her. The feel of her body in my embrace had to be the equivalent to heaven. It felt so right.
A knock at my door interrupted my flashback, making me open the drawer to the left of me and pull my pistol out. After getting shot I was a bit more paranoid.
“Since when you start locking doors?” Rem’s voice alerted me to it being him.
“Since a motherfucker thought they were about to make me maggot food and go about their business.” I pressed the new addition to my office and buzzed my brother in before closing the drawer with my gun.
He walked in holding a fucking food carton, of course, when did he not? Reminisce ate more than anybody I knew with his hungry ass.
“Nah, I’m not hungry, Rem, thanks for asking,” I said aloud, watching him set himself up at the coffee table to have lunch like this was a popular lunch spot.
“Good, I ain’t fuckin’ offer.”
I laughed. “It’s cool, ’cause my sister is coming through a little later.”
He waved me off, eyes finding the TV that was usually on, but off today. “Yeen watching none of that feeling sap shit?”
I shook my head. I hadn’t been watching too many interviews because I feel like I wasn’t bottling things up anymore. Caya and I discussed and debated everything. We probably even had pillow talk, but all in all we communicated in a way neither of us was really used to but craved.
“So, you get a girl and you’re just off that shit? No more damaged TV? She must be saving your soul, huh?” It was hard to tell if he was joking or serious because Reminisce’s dry humor could be mistaken for seriousness.
“Something like that. She’s moving in with me,” I revealed, grabbing my phone to track Jade’s always late ass.
“How you feel about that?”
“What do you mean how do I feel? I asked her. Well maybe not asked. I forced her hand a lil bit.”
Rem laughed. “So, you strongarmed her into moving in with you.”
I shrugged. “Probably. I just did the necessary. Life is too fucking short to be moving according to somebody else’s plan. I’m moving on my own from now on.”
“Alright, man with a plan, what else you got in mind?”
“Not sure yet. I’m letting stuff come to me. When I figure it out I’ll let you know.” I winked at him just to fuck with him.
He flipped me off.
I was about to say something when my phone vibrated and I glanced down and saw it was my baby. She had requested to FaceTime.
“Look I’ve done as much packing as I’m gonna do today. Don’t come in my place starting fires today.”
“We’ll see. If that closet ain’t empty, I’m for sure lighting some shit up. I might come in with some wood tonight.” I winked into the phone.
“Yo. Y’all speaking in code or something? If so, please spare my fucking ears. I’m tryna eat over here.”
“Nobody is speaking in code, Reminisce. Your nutty ass brother set my house on fire Monday. Now he’s threatening to do it again if I’m not where he thinks I should be on this packing thing.” She called herself telling on me.
Of course Reminisce’s stupid ass started laughing. “Damn, sis, you out there bad. You better put your foot down. Don’t be letting this weird ass nigga tell you what to do.”
I laughed at him. “Don’t be putting bright ass ideas in her head.” Then I peered down at the screen. “Tell me you at least packed up Adonis’s room.”
“I actually did. But I still have to ge?—”
“Yeah, I’m finna come in there and start a fucking bonfire. Ask my Lil G if he ever had smores.”
“Rennix, will you stop?”
“Hall nah. You know Jade has this pool party this weekend. I need you to get your ass in gear so you moved in and not having to unpack Saturday.”
“I cannot believe you.”
“You should. Now get to work, I’ma see you tonight. Is that cool?”
She sighed, then fell back against her bed. “I hope you don’t expect me to cook, because that’s dead.”
“You didn’t wanna cook anyway, but it’s cool. Have that shit packed or we beefing.”
“Fine, bye.” She sucked her teeth.
“Stay beautiful and keep it tight for me, bae.” I winked and she hung up on my ass like I knew she would.
“So, you forcing her to mov—” A knock at my door grabbed my attention.
“Who is it?”
“Me boss, it’s Boe.”
I buzzed her in and sat back in my chair to see what she wanted. She stepped in and looked around briefly before her eyes were on me. “Um, there’s two detectives up front looking for you.”
I didn’t get a chance to stand or respond because of course my brother was on his feet.
We exited my office, Boe leading the way and my brother behind me.
I hated when people popped up on me. I figured the two pigs that were here the night of the club shooting would be back.
The younger of the duo didn’t seem too interested in dealing with it, but his partner had a chip on his shoulder.
I could tell from the way he looked at me and tried to be condescending.
I was a few feet from them when the older of the two turned to meet me. He tapped his partner who turned around instantly.
“Rennix Blac, it’s good to see you back in business and back to work.” Then his eyes found Reminisce who stood on the side leaned against the banister.
“Was never out of business. How can I help you gentlemen?” I brought the old nigga’s attention back over to me.
“I don’t know if you remember, but this is my partner, Detective Nathan McDaniel and I am Detective Juleus Cole. We were following up on a report of a shoo?—”
“Three and a half weeks later. Work must be piled.” Rem’s voice grabbed their attention.
“Well I’m not sure how things run back home but here we handle things according to need based priorities.” He showed his hand, letting it be known he had been looking me up.
“Well in that case, your attention to detail and prioritization isn’t needed here. It’s handled, Detective.” I put my attention on the old nigga since he was the one doing all the fucking talking.
He stepped forward, about to get in my face at the same time my twin stepped into his.
“I don’t know what your problem is, you arrogant little prick, but I can make life in my city pretty fucking hard.” By now his partner had his arm out to pull him back. At least he tried to read the room.
I was still unmoved, physically and mentally. “Your city, huh? You heard that, Rem? This is his city.”
My brother laughed. “Yeah I heard Old School. Besides him telling you that your services are not needed, is there a reason you’re here? ’Cause if not, you can get your ass up outta my brother’s club.”
Detective Juleus snatched away from his partner, creating some space before he fixed his shirt. “This isn’t the last either of you will see of me.”
“I look forward to it.” I smirked.
“Don’t let his old ass get you killed, youngin.”
“That a threat?” Nathan asked, finally finding his voice.
Rem laughed. “Nah. It’s a warning.” Of course Reminisce being Reminisce had to signal a gun with his hand.
