Chapter 47- Tension
If the atmosphere was tense before I didn't know what to say about now. My dad glared at me and my mom looked like she was about to cry. The poor woman always had to be in the middle of our fight.
" What did you say, Cole?" He asked, looking at me with his usual hard face, if he thought I was scared of him then his gray hair must be really messing with his head.
" I said you've got to be kidding me," I repeated, I didn't want to disrespect him but the man was making me mad.
" You think I'm joking? Do I look like someone who jokes with you?" He asked as he stood up I did the same, and so did my mom. I didn't want to be here anymore.
" Please you guys should stop this, please," The sadness in my mom's voice ate at my heart, I didn't want her to ever be sad for any reason.
" Talk to your son," My dad said as he pointed at me.
" He should have it in mind that he'll be getting married to my business partner's daughter, we've discussed it and I don't see anything wrong with it, he refused to decide to get married so I'm doing it for him since I have to do everything for him," Is this old man being serious right now?
" I don't care whatever matchmaking game you and your business partner are trying to play or do, but one thing is certain, I'm not sure I'm the son you're talking about, I'm guessing you have another son somewhere because I Cole Leonard will never marry a woman you choose for me, I'll only marry a woman of my choice and that's final,"
" How dare you?! After all I've done for you, you dare talk to me like that? You ungrateful child!" He was soon going to start his lecture and I was near having a headache, I had to leave.
" Mom thank you for the food, but I'm sorry to say it would take a while before you see me here again," Before she could say anything I turned away from them as I began walking out.
" Cole! Cole! Son, please wait!" My mom called as she quickly followed me.
" My son," I heard her whisper with pain in her voice and that made me stop and then I turned to her with a sigh.
" Mom, I'm sorry this had to happen but I know it was unavoidable, this is how all dinners with him always turn out, I knew there was going to be a fight,"
" But I wish there wasn't, I don't like that it has to be like this all the time, I want my family back, I want…" She couldn't finish what she wanted to say as she started crying. I quickly rushed to her and embraced her.
" Hey, Mom, please don't cry, I love you, you know that right? I know I'm not the best son, I know I gave you a lot of headaches growing up but I'm a better person now,"
" You're my son, and I'm proud of you, I'm always proud of you," She said as she held onto me like I was going to disappear.
" Mom don't ever cry, it pains me to see you cry," I said as I wiped her tears and she weakly smiled up at me, I wasn't having it, I needed to see her full smile.
" You know how it is, you know I can't stay a week without seeing you, you know our special restaurant," I said and she nodded.
" So stop crying and put on a broad smile for me," This time she managed to smile and it warmed my heart.
" I really wish things could go back to how it was when your brother was alive, I really want that, I want my happy family back,"
" Mom at the right time everything would be okay, but for now I think it's better Dad and I just stay clear of each other, we're not thinking straight, and you have to tell him that that idea of choosing a wife for me isn't going to work."
" I promise no one would make you marry a woman you don't love," She said and I could see the sincerity in her eyes, but it was easier said than done, we both knew my dad and when he wanted something he'd move mountains just to get it, I just hope he wasn't serious about getting me a wife.
"I'll leave now Mom, take care,"
" You too son, please drive safely," She said before I smiled at her and walked out.
I got into my car and the engine roared to life then I drove out of my parent's house.
I couldn't help but think back to what happened at dinner, my dad didn't understand that I wasn't a little boy he could control, not like he has ever been able to control me, then he suddenly came up with the idea of giving me a wife.
I parked outside my house as got out of the car and walked in. The house was lonely, I suddenly wished Anna was living with me, then I'd come home and see her beautiful face, maybe with my shirt or even better with nothing on.
Speaking of which, she hasn't called me yet, she'd be at home by now.
I picked up my phone and didn't see any call from her nor was there a message indicating that she was home, it was only the last message that she sent me when she was going home.
My heart instantly became filled with worry, I dialed her number and it rang several times but I didn't get any response.
Maybe she was busy, that must be it.
But I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was wrong, no it can't be, could it be…
I quickly dialed the officer's number.
" Hello officer, I'm sorry to be calling you at this time, it's really urgent, I want to know about my secretary's ex-boyfriend who was arrested. Is he still in jail?" I said as I began to pace.
" Oh, he was released on bail," My heart skipped but I hid the fear in my voice.
" Released? Why didn't anybody tell me?" I asked trying not to sound angry
" I'm sorry sir, I thought you knew, is there a problem?" He asked, I couldn't make a complaint about anything when I was not sure.
" No, thank you officer, good night,"
" Good night," He said before the call ended. As soon as I ended the call with him I dialed Anna's number but with each ring, I felt my heart thudding in my chest.
