32. Chapter Thirty-Two
Chapter Thirty-Two
Luke
Everything is black. Nothing makes sense. One minute, my future seemed almost certain. I was reaching out with my fingers at full stretch ready to take it.
Happiness.
A family.
A life.
Eva.
They were right there for the fucking taking before they were being cruelly ripped from my grasp.
My heart feels like it has an icy hand wrapped around it. Fear hammers so hard, the beat in my chest pulses through my ears. Without my vision, every sound is more intense.
Every knock.
Every hit.
They all echo a thousand times louder in my heavy ears.
I’ve been drugged.
Carried from the side of the road, I remember a sharp pain before everything went black. I have no idea where I now find myself. All I know is that there are two people.
One man .
One woman.
They’re taking turns to make sure I stay weak. Whatever the last instrument was, it knocked me for six.
Death would be easier.
No more pain.
No more aching.
No more doing this.
Just, no more.
No. That was then. This is now.
You survived worse than what these arseholes can deliver. Don’t let them win!
They don’t talk. The only sound from them I’ve caught is that of their exhausted huffs and tired sighs. I’m heavy. They’ve moved me twice and lowered me to what feels like carpet. The cold air bites at my skin, and the way which they’ve secured my wrists is telling of cable ties.
Fuck. This will be harder to escape.
Adam. Where is he?
Fear tries to consume me as I narrow my listening, trying to catch any sound that suggests he’s here. Amplified by my heavy breathing, the sound of my panic creeps into the air around me.
Breathe.
Breathe.
Breathe.
Don’t let the darkness take you like it once did.
The adrenaline begins to dissipate. The panic fuelled state subsides like evil stepping back into the shadows.
I don’t move. I don’t give them any reason to hit me again. Feigning unconsciousness, I picture Eva and the life I’m going to give her and her son.
Every dream she’s ever dreamed.
I’m going to make it real.
There’s a heaven in this hell, and she’s it.
