Chapter 38

Thirty-Eight

Hayden

“What are you even doing with her?” I look at Kayden who has a glass of brandy in his hand.

Kayden doesn’t usually drink but when he does, it’s always the best brandy or cognac that bars or clubs hold. Most of the time it’s Hennessy because that’s what he prefers.

“With who?” I ask as I watch Jaclyn, Max, and Natalia dance in the middle of the dance floor.

“You know who,” Kayden mutters before taking a sip of his drink.

Jaclyn is a force.

And I don’t mean it in a sense where she, herself is forceful or the clingy type. I mean whenever I’m with her, it’s so easy to just enjoy her that she doesn’t even need to try to please me or make me feel calm. She is a fucking natural somehow.

She invades my mind even when I tried so hard to get her out of it.

“I don’t know. I just like having her,” I say truthfully and look at Kayden.

“So are you guys together or not?”

Jaclyn and I started messing around after her date with Lucas which was in like January? February?

I don’t know, I didn't pay much attention to their relationship, if that is what you would even call it.

Our first kiss was in that closet at the beginning of the semester which really made me more interested in her.

It’s March 21, my golden birthday, and all I want to do is leave this place and take Jaclyn with me back to the apartment.

We’ve been messing around but nothing serious. I have this need to show everyone in the fucking world that she’s mine and not to be fucked around with. That’s why I like touching her in public because guys stare and they need to know she’s with me. Jaclyn thinks people don’t stare at her but they do. She has no fucking clue how desirable she is.

It’s weird how I went from having this weird grudge or need for her when I was a teenager and it somehow transformed into some sort of obsession .

“If you mean you can fuck with her or anyone else can touch her, then no. She is with me. She’s mine. Don’t look, don’t touch, or even breathe too close to her face,” I say, glaring at Kayden because he’s being a little shit.

I mean every single word.

She’s mine.

I sound like a goddamn child arguing over a toy but I can’t help but not care.

Kayden smirks. “Well, then.” He looks at the dance floor, watching them dance. My eyes go to Jaclyn and the others. My eyes furrow when I see her eyes droopy. She is dancing slowly while resting her hand on Max as she dances up and down. Jaclyn is dancing slowly but not intentionally. Something’s wrong, I know it. I feel it. My eyes zoom into her hands. They are shaking which makes me stand up. “What’s wrong?”

I don’t answer him, instead I go straight towards Jaclyn. Pushing through anyone who’s in my way to get to her. People are cursing at me but I don’t give a fuck. I just need to make sure she’s okay because she doesn’t look like she is.

She didn’t drink.

I didn’t see her drink and I believe her when she says that she didn’t.

When I walk up to Jaclyn I grab her arms off of Max to make her look at me .

Jaclyn opens her eyes slowly. She looks like she is tired and restless. I hold her face in my hand, making sure she keeps her eyes on me but her eyelids keep trying to close.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m just tired and feel weak. I’m fine. I probably need water,” she says in a slurred tone. I run my hand down her chest to her heart and it’s beating against my hand fast.

“Where is your phone?”

“In my bag at the bar.”

I hold onto her waist and walk off the dance floor, ignoring Max’s yells. Natalia is too busy dancing with Chris.

I push people out of the way again as I hold Jaclyn to my chest. She’s leaning most of her body weight on me as I walk through the crowds of people.

When I get to the bar, Kayden’s glass is gone and his eyes are filled with worry. “What happened?”

“Where’s her bag?” I ask him, ignoring his original question.

He grabs it from the chair. “What do you need?”

“Her phone. Look at her notifications,” I say while sitting Jaclyn on the bar.

“She has notifications from her mom and one notification from Dexcom with a red urgent symbol.”

“Fuck,” I mutter and wave down the bartender. “Get me a large to-go cup of orange juice. ”

He nods his head before leaving. “What's wrong? Tell me, Hayden,” Kayden says, while running his hand through his hair.

“Let me see her phone.” Kayden shows me her phone. I type in her password and go to her Dexcom app, seeing her blood sugar is 61 and going down. “She’s low. I need to get her home.”

“Do you need me to do anything?” he asks, looking at Jaclyn who is resting her head on my chest.

“No. I just need to get that juice and get the hell out of here.”

“I’m hot,” Jaclyn says in a low tone, her hand running down her chest and pulling at her dress.

I put her hair up with a hair tie I keep around my wrist.

I got it from Jaclyn when I took her pony tail out as I kissed her in my car.

Eventually the bartender comes back with the to-go cup.

I take the drink and give it to Jaclyn. “Drink this.” She reaches out to get it and I notice her hands are shaking. Once she grabs it, I pick her up from the chair and hold her bridal style. She leans her head on my chest with the straw in her mouth. “Tell Natalia what happened. Chris will drive you guys.” I don’t stay there talking to Kayden any longer, I leave, pushing past more people to get to the exit. I just need to get out of here and make sure she stays awake. “Don’t fall asleep, okay?”

“I’m trying, fuck,” she mutters and I look down and see her rolling her eyes at me.
