Chapter Twenty

Libby

“Fuck! What time is it?” The room is pitch black when I startle Blue out of his sleep.

His arm drapes my waist to tug me back against his warm chest. “Early,” he croaks.

I hate to do it, but I lean away to pat the nightstand for my phone.

Shit. Four in the morning.

“I gotta go.” My body feels like it’s heavy, drawn back to his.

After the bath, he gave me a full massage until I fell asleep in his arms.

He set a very high bar.

It’s going to be hard not getting too attached.

“Hey?” He reaches out, tugging me down to trap me against him. “I’ll see you at Black Gulch?” His cheek raises in a sly smile before he pulls me in for a kiss.

When I back away, I feel my eyebrows knot. “Do people really do that? In the mornings, with bad breath? ”

He barrel rolls with me under him, pinning me to the bed. “My desire to have my mouth on you far outweighs any negatives.”

As if to emphasize his point, he crashes his lips to mine.

Holy shit.

The weight of him, the heat of his touch…it makes me start to forget that I have to work.

“Maybe—” He nips his way down my throat, then pulls one of my sensitive nipples between his teeth. “—if I started down here—” He licks a line down my belly, then dives his scalding mouth to my tender pussy.

A gasp rips out of me at the shock of him suctioning on my throbbing clit. It almost hurts with how electric it feels.

Knotting my fingers in his hair, I pry his face from between my thighs. “You’re evil. Yet, I’m okay with it.”

He surprises me by leaning forward and kissing me again.

I can taste myself, and it’s strangely erotic as he climbs back over me, splaying out my knees to settle the tip of his hard cock against the hollow of my aching seam.

“Blue,” I murmur even as my nails dig into his flanks and my heels spur into his thighs. “I have to go.”

“Just a teaser for later.” The husky tone of his voice ripples over me like warm syrup.

When he drops his hips, seating his tip just inside my quivering entrance, another small whine flees from my throat .

God, it hurts so good.

“More,” I pant, begging him with my clutching fingers. “Deeper.”

He’s killing me with tiny thrusts. “I can’t.” Pausing, a shiver runs through him. “You’re so tight I’ll lose control.”

With a groan, he withdraws, flipping onto his side. “We’ll pick this back up later, baby.” He clenches the head of his dick so tightly it turns purple. “And I’ll know from now on to wake up earlier.” He tosses me a wide grin

Fire races through my veins seeing how badly he wants me.

Begrudgingly, I climb away and pull on my sweats. “This—” I point to his raging hard on. “—is how I expect to find you this afternoon.”

He chuckles, then lets his fingers stroke his full length. “Well, yes ma’am. My big task of the day is just moving your cows from the sale barn to Mason’s. I’ll be waiting for you.”

My bag has my essentials, I’m so used to staying over at Char’s house, I keep it packed. For some reason it feels different pulling out my toothbrush in Blue’s bathroom.

Staring at my own reflection, I don’t care so much about my messy ass hair, it’s the little red blemishes up and down my neck that worry me.

I really hope Dad doesn’t notice. I’m a grown woman, but I don’t even want to open the can of worms of him questioning me .

At this point, it’s just a fling. Right?

I catch the bead of tears in my eyes in the mirror.

Nope. Not happening. I’m enjoying the moment, that’s it.

Whatever happens in the future is still there.

Today, I have to look my father in the face and lie to him, act like I didn’t just sleep with his best friend, and also buy my own damn cows in secret.

The only part I’m really dreading is the moment when Dad realizes who he sold to.

I don’t think I have to worry about Blue trying to break my heart for the next twelve hours, so at least I have that going for me.

There’s a tinge of sadness when I open the door to the bedroom and find it empty.

But the smell of percolating coffee pulls me to the kitchen.

He’s wearing only a pair of dark boxer briefs that barely contain his sizeable bulge.

They do make his butt look amazing though. I can’t resist giving it a little pinch to make him jump as I walk by.

This might not last forever, may as well enjoy it.

“I figured since I kept you in bed longer than you expected, I should at least send you off caffeinated.” He winks as he hands me a to-go cup, complete with a lid .

“Careful, Blue. I might start to think you like me.” There’s more truth to my words than I care to admit.

He wraps his warm arms around me, pulling me tight to his bare chest. “Just a little,” he growls, cupping my palm over his hard cock beneath the thin fabric of his underwear.

After a burning kiss, he spins me on my heel and smacks my ass. “Go on, before I strip you back down.”

With a squeal, I find myself giggling as I climb into my truck.

By the time I pull into the yard at the dairy and get started on my morning chores, I’m questioning if any of it was real.

I don’t feel any different after finally having sex.

There was some part of me that thought it was like some huge awakening, that my entire body would transform into some mystical being.

But all I can think about is wanting to do it again and all the new things I want to try.

The slamming of the trailer doors shakes me from my thoughts.

“What was that?” I ask Devon, already half-knowing the answer.

“Dad’s loading up those cows, duh.” My brother looks at me under his mess of dirty blond hair like I’m stupid. “He had me help him get them loaded last night since you were fucking gone. ”

“‘Fuck’ is for grownups, child,” I quip on autopilot, while my heart cracks knowing that Millie is on that truck.

All I can hope is that Blue can follow through.

I guess this is where I find out who he chooses, me or Dad.

“You aren’t my boss, Lib,” Devon grumbles.

That makes me pause. “What if I was? Would you still work for me?”

His eyes and nose scrunch up. “What do you think I’ve been doing the last couple of years? If you take over, you better give me a raise.”

“Wait? You’d stay on?” For some reason I didn’t expect that from him.

His shoulders rise and fall in a shrug. “Sure, you’re easier to deal with than Dad. He really does pay like shit, though.” He shakes his head, opening the gate to let the last batch of cows into the milking parlor. “My football gear was like a whole ass paycheck.”

I let out a groan. “Language, Dev.”

He slams the handle through the clasp, his brows dropping over his blue eyes. “I’m working like an adult, I can talk like one. Fucking fire me.” He crosses his arms over his chest, glaring down his nose at me.

“Sorry. You’re right. We’re in this together. I don’t think I could run this place without you.” I hold out my palm in a peace offering. “I want us to be partners, you okay with that? ”

He glances down at my extended arm. “Seriously? I’m not just cheap labor?” Slowly, he reaches out and shakes my hand. “Like, I can help make decisions and stuff?” A smile tugs up his cheek where the straggly whiskers of his attempt at a mustache cling.

This feels like a “moment”. “Yea, Dev. We’re family, it’s our business. You and me.” I pull him in for a fast hug. “Dad’s gonna be cranky for a while, but I’m glad I can count on you.”

“Thanks, Lib,” he whispers. His back seems a little straighter as he walks away. “I actually don’t mind this place,” he calls over his shoulder. “Audrey said she thinks it’s cool that our milk makes her favorite ice cream.”

Ahh. That girl from school he’s mentioned a few times.

It’s amazing what a difference that makes.

I don’t know if I’d have the courage to move forward with taking over without Blue’s help.

Don’t count on him. He’s only temporary.

There’s some irrational tiny voice in the back of my mind hoping that it isn’t.

But his past is plenty of warning on what to expect.

Keeping my emotions in check is gonna be hard. He’s just so damn likeable.

And the way he acts like he wants my needs to come first…Why can’t I secretly hope that maybe this is different?

Am I crazy to want to be the one who gets to keep him ?

Yep.

“Hey, Dev? I’m gonna go say bye to Millie.” I hope he heard me.

Pushing out of the hot barn into the cold spring air is a nice change from sweating by cow butts all morning.

It’s a bit of a punch to the gut to see the trailer parked at the loading ramp.

But what I didn’t expect was Blue’s truck to be attached to it.

As I get closer, the front end drops and I can hear it settle over the ball.

Then the crank of the jack being wound up.

Stepping around to the front, I catch Blue furiously spinning the handle before he glances up.

A broad grin splits his face and his thumb jerks to the back where I can’t see. “Clay? I think I got it.”

Oh.

“Alright!” Dad’s voice drifts from the far end. “Let’s check the brake lights.”

Blue looks over his shoulder, then steps over the hitch towards me.

His fingers wrap behind my neck to crash his lips over mine.

I’m breathless when he pulls away. “Sounds good, gimme a sec,” he yells at my hidden father.

“I had to go to the sale barn anyways,” he whispers. “Figured this would make it easier to see you again.” With a wink, he moves to the driver’s side and flips the lever on the dash.

“How’s that?” he calls to my dad, all nonchalant like he didn’t just flip my doubts on their head.

My heart races in my chest. Is he being for real?

Or is this a ploy he pulls on all of his girls?

Fuck, I wish I knew.

“You’re good.” Dad saunters alongside the wheel well, ignoring the loaded cows jostling inside the heavy trailer. “Lib? Millie’s near the end.” He gestures behind him.

Shit, I’m supposed to be upset.

“Are you still sure about this?” I cross my arms, pinning my baggy overalls to my belly.

“No, but there isn’t another choice.” Dad’s mouth thins and he turns away from me. “Thanks again, Blue.

My nails dig into my palms.

Don’t fight back. Don’t get mad. I have a plan.

Operation Moo is underway.

I have to turn away so he doesn’t see my smirk.

Millie’s wide eyed with her legs splayed, but she moves her nose close enough for me to scratch it.

“Hey, big momma. It’s okay. I promise I’m gonna save you.” A knot forms in my throat as I step away.

This is the day when everything changes.

My dad is going to be so angry I did this.

But I have to take a stand, make a move, prove that I’m able to be in charge of my own future, even if it’s not the one my father wants for me.

There’s only one variable that could cost me everything.

Blue.
