Chapter 16

Payton

“Still no word from him?”

I shake my head. Nope. The guy has ghosted me. He sent me a text, saying he would have to take a rain check on our date, and I haven’t heard from him since. After a week of silence, I’m guessing I won’t be hearing from him again.

“You know what I think.” Chassie’s voice pulls me out of the deep end of my self-doubt.

“I think you say fuck him and we get dressed up and go dancing tonight. If the man thinks you’re going to be sitting at home waiting by the phone for him to call, he’s wrong.

Besides, maybe you’ll meet someone else tonight.

It never works out with the rebound guy anyway. ”

Cage wasn’t a rebound guy. I was actually starting to believe he was the one.

It was all happening crazy fast, but I’d never felt that way about anyone.

Not even Callum. God, I sound ridiculous.

I slept with the guy three times and I’m acting like a lovesick fool.

Just because we had some amazing sex and a few deep conversations, doesn’t mean the guy wants to marry me.

“You know what. I think you’re right.” And I think I’ll wear my red boots tonight. Fuck him.

“I need another drink. Want anything?”

Chass shakes her head and keeps shaking her little ass to her favorite song.

At least one of us is having a great time.

I feel like I’ve spent my entire night batting off creeps.

What don’t they understand? A line dance is not a couples’ dance.

You don’t grind up on a girl when she’s in the middle of the Cotton Eye Joe.

“What can I get you, gorgeous?”

“I’ll have tequila. Make that a double.”

The bartender pours me a hefty glass, giving me a wink. When I go to hand him my card to pay, he shakes his head. “It’s on the house. Maybe as a tip though, you could give me your number.”

For as good looking as he is, I probably should. I should take Chassie’s advice and fuck someone else to get over the wolf. But I don’t want to. Just the thought makes me sick.

“That’s awfully nice of you.” I smile. “Thanks for the drink. And as for my number, we’ll see how good the service is tonight.

” I give him a wink, then toss the drink back and wipe my mouth, before I turn and make my way back to Chass, putting a little extra sway in my ass so at least the guy will serve me another drink in a bit.

Right as I get to the floor, the music changes to a slow song.

It’s time for the couples to take the floor. Which means I’ll be taking a seat.

It doesn’t look like Chassie will be joining me. She’s found herself a dance partner, so I make my way to a table and pull out my phone, not wanting the guys to see it as an opportunity to come over and talk to me.

The missed message on my screen has my heart pounding.

Outlaw: Tried calling but you didn’t answer. Need to see you, Cowgirl. Can I come over?

Really? After a week of ghosting me, he’s just going to pop back up out of thin air and act like nothing happened. He expects me to just drop everything and be at his beck and call. At ten o’clock at night, it’s more like a booty call.

Me: Sorry, I’m out.

Outlaw: Out where?

Me: I’m out with friends.

Outlaw: When will you be back?

Me: Don’t know. Why?

Outlaw: I’m desperate for a taste, babe.

Me: Yeah, well, this candy shop is closed.

I thought I could do the whole no-strings-attached, just-sex thing, but I’m not cut out for it.

Not when it comes to this man. My heart is extremely attached.

And it’s more than obvious he only wants sex from me.

He shows up after being MIA for a week, and it’s the first thing out of his mouth.

Well, he’s going to have to turn to the sweetbutts, because this girl is no longer open for business.
