18. Mia
Mia
I talk Wyla’s ear off for half an hour. I ask her every question I can think of, ask for every tip, app, book, whatever can help me.
Right before they left, she thankfully offered me her phone number.
I was definitely going to ask for it, but her volunteering it made me feel better about the interrogation I put her through.
It’s odd that dating Adam has brought more women into my life.
Women who seem to genuinely care about me as much as they do Adam.
I haven’t felt a single bit of jealousy or intimidation…
it’s nice. I haven’t ever had girlfriends before, and if that doesn’t go right on the pro list of this entire situation.
Once we’ve said our goodbyes and they’re gone, Adam unwraps my arms from my body then pulls me to him. “How was that? How are you feeling?”
“Better.” I huff an uneasy chuckle. “Thank you for that. I liked talking to Wyla about it. I don’t know who I would have chosen to talk to about this.
My mom was always worried for me with how hard it was for her to get pregnant—on top of slightly panicking about how they’re going to handle this news, I fear my mother might scare me with all the possible complications. ”
This odd expression crosses Adam’s face. I’ve seen it quite a bit since he got our breakfast. Maybe it was the mention of his parents that brought it on, actually…I want to ask so badly, but “I don’t want to talk” was clearly written on his face when I brought that up.
His hands glide up and down my arms. “I’m glad it helped. I know you mentioned talking to Lucie too, and while talking about Dex’s past might be a little hard for her, I’m sure she’d love to talk about pregnancy stuff.”
That’s true. Wyla and Jett are only visiting from out of town. Getting her number was nice, but talking to Lucie would be good, too.
A whole new terrifying thought runs through my mind. “Holy shit, what if we have twins?”
Adam’s eyes shut as he works through the very clear new fear I just planted in his mind. “Mia, I’m going to beg you not to mention that again.”
“Should I go knock on wood?”
When his eyes finally open and he lets out the tiniest laugh, some of the weight falls off my shoulders.
“Adam, I want to have the baby. I know I said I was pretty sure this morning, but this is my answer—I can do this. I’m just going to have to figure out how to be the perfect mom.”
His hands move to my face. Staring so intently into my eyes, I see every little feature on his face shift to that very serious look I saw at the bar. “I have no doubt you will. I’ll be right next to you, watching in awe.”
Adam leans in, kissing me in that all-consuming way he does.
We can do this. We can have this baby and still be together. We can have it all. It’s just in a different order, and that’s okay. We will make the best possible outcome out of this. I will make it the best for me, for us, for our baby.
My body completely relaxes against him, but then his phone rings.
Mumbling a few curses, he pulls his phone out of his pocket. “Shit. It’s Callie.”
And some of that tension comes back. “I guess we also need to decide when we’re telling them, don’t we?”
Adam shuts his eyes and takes a deep breath. “Yeah, they’re all nosier than you, so I don’t imagine we’ll be able to keep it a secret long. She’s probably just calling to make sure you’re okay.”
“Okay, I’m going to finish my muffin while you talk to her. I got too nervous to finish earlier.”
Adam gives one more quick kiss to my forehead before letting me go and answering the phone.
Moving to the couch, I reach for the muffin and expect Adam to take the call upstairs, but he doesn’t. To which I assume he does, knowing good and well that I would love to listen. It was a bold statement to say the group is nosier than me.
“She’s good, Cals. Got some fluids…” Adam glances at me, and I can see the nervousness in his eyes. “No, everything’s fine. I swear. Did you have a good time last night?”
That seems to get them onto the party for a few minutes, which I’m grateful for. I really wanted that party to go well for them. I’m only slightly annoyed that I can’t hear what Callie’s saying, but Adam’s going to fill me in whether he wants to or not.
“No, I don’t need to talk to Olsson, I’ll be at the game… I don’t know, I can ask her… Okay, I’ll talk to you later.”
I snort a laugh when he sends me a look as she continues to talk on the phone.
“Okay, Callie, I’ve got to go…” He sighs, then ends the call, and I’m positive she was nowhere near done.
I snort a laugh. “I’m going to need every detail about the party last night. Heavy detail, All-star. Word for word playback.”
That amazing Adam smile graces his face as he makes his way over to me on the couch. “She said it was perfect and was extremely grateful for all the mocktails you did for Will.”
“Which was the favorite drink? Did she love the photo booth? Did she say if anything went wrong? Besides me passing out and getting life-changing news.”
Adam shakes his head. “I’m sure Callie would love to recap the whole night for you, but I can promise you she loved every second of it.”
I let out a breath and take a bite of my muffin.
There’s a slight nauseating feeling, and I’m really hoping it goes away after some food.
Looking at my matcha, the feeling only gets stronger.
Wyla mentioned her cravings and tastes changed like the wind with this pregnancy…
I hope this one is temporary because no longer liking my favorite drink might break me.
“Could you get me some water?” I ask Adam, and despite just sitting down, he practically jumps up.
“My personal favorite.”
My head tilts back with my laugh. Yeah, doing this with him can’t be that bad.
I take the glass of water and get this major urge to chug it. “I guess it’s safe to say this is definitely your child.”
That weird look flashes across his face again, but he quickly replaces it with a smile. “Never doubted it was. So, how do you want to do this, Mia? Where’s our list?”
Going in for another chug of the remaining water, I point to the side table behind him.
“From what Wyla said, I need to call my OB.” I set my empty glass on the table. “With the math in my head, I don’t think I’ll be far enough along for an ultrasound yet, but I need to make the appointment. I’ll get it for a day you’ll be in town…if you want to come, that is?”
Adam gives me a look that can only be interpreted as Are you serious right now?
“I assumed you would, but I was just double-checking!” I take a deep breath.
“I don’t know if there’s anything crazy after that.
I’ll need to get some prenatals, and pay more attention to what I’m eating and drinking…
just checking to make sure everything’s safe for the baby.
I don’t really know what else, if I’m being honest. I keep thinking about what’s next, what I can do…
but I think we can just…rest for a minute. ”
Adam tosses the notebook on the coffee table, then pulls me into his lap. “I hate that feeling.”
“I fucking hate that feeling.” I laugh. “We have nothing to fix. Nothing other than the tests telling me I’m pregnant. I’m honestly having a hard time believing it still.”
“Tell me about it,” Adam mutters, then kisses my shoulder. “Do you wait to tell people until that appointment or—I’m comfortable with whatever you’re comfortable with, Mia.”
“I don’t know. I mean, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with telling our close family and friends now.
They would still be the ones we called on if this were to go…
” I trail off, not liking the thought of any complications.
I clear my throat. “But is telling them before a game going to be weird? You have games every day, then you leave, so I guess that doesn’t make much of a difference. ”
“About that…would you want to come with me for these away games?”
“Adam—”
“I know, I know, you probably can’t. I just—I hate the idea of leaving you.”
“Babe, this is your job. I hate the thought of you leaving too, but like Wyla said, we’ll figure this out.”
“I know.” Adam takes a heavy breath.
I shuffle my legs so they rest on either side of him.
I need to look him in the eyes while I tell him this.
“Listen, last night you told me you wanted to still be with me no matter what we decided… Adam, I want you to know I’m in this with you, too.
Maybe it would be smart for us to put our relationship on pause, but I don’t want to do that.
Yeah, I feel better now with my list and after talking to Wyla, but the thing I’m going to need the most to get through this is you. ”
I know I’ve implied wanting to do this with him already, but as the relief floods his face, it’s clear to me that he needed to hear it.
But when he moves in an instant, all it takes is his lips on mine to learn that he’s desperate for it.
