Chapter 2
I thought the boy was rude but the man who stood on the other side of the swimming pool was infuriating. How could he be casually swimming when an investigation was happening just below him without a care in the world. His name was not known by many as they referred to him as the Scorpion.
"We are here under the orders of the court for an arrest warrant in speculation that you had a hand in the prime minister's daughter's disappearance. You have two options to follow me back to the precinct on your own will or I cuff you and bring you with me," I stated.
"Stinger," he said almost in a whisper. The rude boy appeared from behind me his presence which was completely unnoticed by me before.
He helped the man put on his robe who in turn thanked the boy.
I watched their interaction silently trying my best to remain calm at the speed of how he was doing things.
I had dealt with criminals all my life and I wasn't going to let him see that he rattled me.
This man here was different from most of the gang leaders I have arrested.
They were all on the run when arrested but he was in the comfort of his home relaxed and waiting.
"Detective, you look rather impatient. Should I join you at the precinct like this, or would you be patient enough for me to put on something more decent?
" Our eyes met an underlying message in his words.
I tried to decipher what he was up to, but he remained expressionless.
"Since the building hasn't been searched, you should allow my men in, then you can get dressed and accompany me to the station," I said.
"Feel free to look around detective I have nothing to hide," he said. He took a seat on the lounge chair while he finished his remaining cigar.
At the precinct, he was seated in the interrogation room not slightly bothered by the countless accusations thrown in his face.
"Is there any solid evidence for you to lock me up?
" he directed the question at Detective Suarez.
Legally there was no evidence to lock him up but knowing Suarez he did not want that son of a bitch in the open.
He loathed the mafia. His brother was killed by a mafia gang some years back and ever since his dedication has been to getting each one of them behind bars.
"Suarez right," he said watching my partner intensely.
"I get that you have a personal vendetta for people like us and instead of getting emotional and wasting my time here without enough proof I would like to get back to business.
" Two officers had to hold Suarez from punching the sick bastard.
I also held back trying to remain calm since it was the first time I was dealing with an incomprehensible man.
Suarez was pulled out from the investigation room where he joined watching the man through the glass.
"He is one hell son of a bitch," he sighed.
"Language!" I cautioned. I had to agree with him though.
I took the documents in my hand that we had dug deep into the man's past and discovered his real name and identity.
Files like his had to be acquired in ways sometimes the law could not pull off.
I took a seat in front of him on the grey chair placing the documents on the table.
"Atticus Romanov, son of Nova Volkov and Dimitri Bilshan." At the mention of his parents' names he watched me with a dangerous glint in his eyes his body posture defensive. If I hadn't been watching him closely I wouldn't have noticed.
I read at least three files with different names and solid identities. Noticing from his reaction with the first file his name must be Atticus or those names were his parents' name. Either way he gave no confirmation whatsoever on any of the files.
"Detective all these files have been collected from records from all the foster homes I was adopted into during my childhood. I would feel more comfortable if you used the name which is registered by the state and recognized in all my identification documents. My name is Ivan Bratan," he stated.
My eyes met his and I felt the blood chill in my veins.
Is that what fear felt like. At that moment the man seated across the room felt intimidating but I refused to cave.
I was the detective not him. I put away his files which all led to a dead end as he had answers to every question with evidence to back it up.
"Do you have a hand in the kidnapping of the prime minister's daughter?" He crossed his legs and brought his hands on his knees all that while observing me. He took his time to answer the question and I was worried he wasn't going to cooperate with me.
Wait, when did I ever worry a criminal is not cooperating. There were so many ways to get him to talk unfortunately we didn't even have an inkling to keep him detained after twenty four hours.
"No." Just one word and I felt like throwing a chair across the room. " Why were your men caught at the crime scene of his daughter's abduction?" I pressed him for more information.
"Believe it or not detective my boys had a shipment to deliver at that building where the abduction took place.
It happened that it was pure coincidence the time a van was seen fleeing the scene is when one of my vans had finished delivering and left the building.
The men who took the girl are not my men," he explained.
Everything he said made sense but also looked like a well diversed plan to escape the abduction charges.
"If what you are saying os true then I guess you won't have a problem with leading us to the van which did the shipment and also let us identify your men with those who were seen taking the girl," I suggested.
"Of course detective I want this case closed as soon as possible my business won't run itself. I need to get back to work."
And do you like Ivan's personality?
