Chapter 42
"Come pick me up I have sent you a pin."
"Ivan, are you okay?" Ramon shuffled over the phone.
"I just need you to get here right away!"
The phone fell off my hand and I did my best to not allow my eyes to shut close. I can't believe Kayde had the nerve to actually drug me. I watched him crash the pills and put them in the juice I just didn't think he had it in him to go ahead with his plan.
I hated that he didn't have enough faith in me to keep him safe that he had to leave without me. The lead was a set up. I could tell and I had to dull the effects of those goddamn pills or he was going to get himself killed.
The prime minister had to be behind it one way or another. Why in the world would a lead that has evidence against the prime minister pop out of the blue when the man is expeditiously gifted in covering all his trails. It was too good to be true and the detective must have sensed it.
Yet why would he drug him and run straight into danger. Was he so desperate in glory that he wanted to be the reputable detective who cracked all cases.
His vision was becoming more foggy by the minute and he hated it.
He couldn't summon his muscles to cooperate with movement.
His senses were dulling by the minute. He needed Ramon to get there as soon as he could.
He was sure Kayde took his car and so he couldn't leave.
The security system was under some sort of lockdown the detective had managed to set off before he left.
The man's skills were so capable it worried him. No one could ever override his system only the person who installed it. Himself. Yet the detective treated it like child's play and locked him in his own house.
After hours of falling in and out of unwarranted sleep he heard the alarms go off. Ramon must have arrived.
"Open," he commanded. Nothing happened until he tried louder and the security system asked for the safety question. He had to use all the strength left in him to answer when finally he heard the front door open and more than one person rushing upstairs.
"Oh my Ivan what happened to you?" the most annoying voice asked.
Even without sight he could tell the man had his signature Cheshire cat expression. Apart from his annoying voice he heard a voice that made him somewhat calm.
"Ivan if you can hear me I'm going to help you up and put you in an ice bath. Tap your finger if you allow me?" Ramon's soothing voice requested.
I tapped my finger on his hand which held mine and I felt lighter as he picked me up.
When the ice came in contact with my skin my eyes slowly adjusted and I spotted Marchetti standing behind Ramon.
I would have asked what he was doing here but judging by Ramon's hostile stare it must have been a situation he couldn't get himself out of.
The silence in the room lasted for fifteen minutes until I could clearly perceive my surroundings without a sleepy haze.
"Ivan, what happened here?"
His questions seemed simple but it could be interpreted as who were you here with and if I find out I may put a knife on their throat and watch them bleed to death as I sip my scotch. Vance was a despicable man very much like his father.
"It's good to see you too Vance and as stylish as always." My voice came out stronger than I had intended and so I had to soften the blow of fuck you and learn to mind your own business with something less threatening.
"I was out of town for some business then ended up in a club. Had a couple of drinks then a strong headache caught up with me and so I decided to leave doubting someone may have sparked my drink. From there I don't remember much only calling Ramon here."
His expression said it all. Bullshit.
Yet I still acted like I couldn't remember anything no matter how hard I tried.
"How did you get here? I didn't see your car. If this is a safe house isn't nobody supposed to know about it. If you were dropped by a cab wouldn't that put you at risk?"
His questions weren't adding up because a particular detective decided he had to get work done one way or another.
"I can't really remember much. A lot of last night is pretty foggy."
Ramon's eyes met mine and he immediately understood what I was trying to communicate and he left the bathroom.
"Were you here with someone?"
I met his eyes dead on, even as I lied to him. I did not falter or show any sign of weakness.
"No."
"I see," he answered making his way to the tub. His eyes lit up with the carnage he has been committing for years.
"That better be true because if I find out otherwise. Your distraction is as good as dirt on the floor. I will make sure I mop it clean," he threatened.
I laughed at his words his eyes turning to slits ready to eliminate everything in his presence.
"You need not get your hands dirty Vance. As much as I would like to give you a reason to mop."
His calculated look turned into a sinister smile and goosebumps on my skin had nothing to do with the ice in the tub but everything to do with the evil man in my presence.
He finally laughed and resumed the position he was in by the door while he watched me his mind already conjuring up ways to execute someone ruthlessly.
"Don't stay too long in the ice bath I wouldn't want my best asset getting ruined with something as silly as a cold. Get dressed we have business to do!" He ordered.
Clenching my fists I stood letting his eyes drink me in while I tried not to puke in disgust. I had to find detective rabbit before something happened to him.
