Dangerous Bond
Chapter 1
My palms grew slick with sweat as I smoothed down my interview skirt, which was already damp enough to stick to my thighs. Landing a role at Sterling Corporation meant success, power, and money.
As a receptionist, I certainly wouldn't get rich, but it was a start a hard-fought chance to show my skills after a long string of late nights and dead-end jobs. My resume practically screamed "underdog," but I refused to let nerves stop me now.
Mrs. Davison, the HR manager, led me into a pristine office with a tight, practiced smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Elena, please, have a seat," she said, her voice sharp as her eyes darted anxiously toward the door. She seemed to be expecting something.
I barely registered the room around me the gleaming glass desk, the expansive city view filling the window, and the distinct hum of money in the air before a piercing scream cut through the quiet.
It was loud and filled with terror, quickly followed by a chorus of panicked voices.
My heart pounded as a rush of adrenaline hit me.
Mrs. Davison opened her mouth to speak, but I was already on my feet. My heels clicked sharply against the wood floor as I chased the sound down a hallway to an emergency exit, which had been propped open by a fire extinguisher.
Pushing through the heavy door, it slammed shut behind me as the wild wind whipped my hair out of its neat bun. The city stretched out, massive and dizzying, but my eyes locked onto a tiny figure near the edge.
A little girl, maybe five years old, stood sobbing with her dark curls flying around her face as she grabbed desperately at the empty air.
"Hey! Little one!" I called out, forcing my voice to remain calm despite my racing pulse. "Don't move, okay? Stay right there."
She hiccuped, her hazel eyes meeting mine through a stream of tears. "I wanna go home!" she cried, her small voice shaking.
Every instinct told me to lung forward and grab her, but a sudden move might scare her into falling. Taking a slow, deliberate step, my heels scraped against the rough concrete.
"I can help you go home," I promised, keeping my tone soft but firm. "What's your name?"
"Sophia," she sobbed, her chest jerking.
"Okay, Sophia. I'm Elena. Can you take one step back for me? Just one?" Keeping her gaze locked with mine, I watched her move backward slowly, her sneakers scratching against the roof.
Closing the distance with a hammering heart, I lunged forward, scooped her up, and pulled her tight against me.
She clung to me, shaking violently as her tears soaked into my blouse. As I stepped safely away from the ledge, a wave of relief washed over me, leaving me breathless. She was safe.
Suddenly, the roof door flew open and a man stepped out, moving with the force of an unstoppable storm.
He was exceptionally tall, and his perfectly tailored suit clearly cost more than a year of my rent. His fierce, silver-grey eyes instantly scanned the scene, shifting the entire energy of the space.
My breath caught in my throat; this was no mere businessman. He radiated absolute power, like a king whose domain I had accidentally breached.
"Sophia!" he growled, his deep voice cutting cleanly through the wind.
He moved with sure, rapid steps, power rolling off him in waves. As he reached for her with his large hands, my body reacted without thinking, and I instinctively held her a little tighter.
"She was right on the edge," I breathed out, my voice shaking. My hair was entirely unraveled, my skirt was wrinkled, and my blouse was soaked, but his intense gaze didn't judge me.
Instead, his eyes locked onto mine, shrinking the world down until he was the only thing I could see. His steady, heavy stare felt as though it could read my every fear and hope.
"Thank you," he said, his voice softening with an underlying current of immense strength. "You saved her."
As he took Sophia from my arms, his hands brushed against mine, sending an unexpected spark shooting through me.
He held his daughter close, shielding her small frame with his massive build. "Are you okay, little one? What happened?" he asked, his tone turning remarkably gentle.
Sophia mumbled into his shoulder, her tiny hands gripping his lapels so tightly that I couldn't catch her words.
He stroked her hair, his expression softening until he looked back up at me.
In an instant, the tenderness vanished, replaced by a sharp, heavy look of intense interest. My skin tingled under the weight of his gaze.
"I'm Alexander Sterling," he said, his deep voice carrying a natural command.
My breath hitched. Alexander Sterling, the CEO of the corporation, a man whose name was spoken only in whispers and tied to dark rumors of power and danger.
Right now, he was looking at me like I was his next strategic move.
"Elena," I replied quietly, my name feeling incredibly small as it swallowed by the wind.
He nodded, his eyes narrowing as he studied me like a prize.
"Elena," he repeated, the syllables sounding heavy and significant on his lips. "You were here for an interview, right?"
My stomach sank as reality rushed back. The interview! I had completely ruined my chances. "Yes," I stammered. "For the receptionist job."
He tilted his head, a small, mysterious smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "A receptionist," he mused, his low voice laced with amusement. "You think that's all you can do, Elena?"
I swallowed hard past my dry throat, my hands twisting nervously. "I needed a job," I said, forcing my voice to steady. "I thought it was a good fit."
His smile widened, a dark glint flashing in his eyes as he stepped closer, towering over me. "A good fit," he echoed smoothly. "You saved my daughter's life and risked your own. That is not the work of a receptionist, Elena. That's something more."
I blinked, my mind racing as my pulse jumped. "More?"
"Yes," he said definitively. "Sophia likes you, and she trusts you.
And I... I see something in you that is much bigger than answering phones and filing papers.
" He stepped even closer, until his sharp, masculine scent filled the air around me.
"How about a new job, Elena? It pays three times the receptionist salary, and you would answer directly to me. "
I stared at him, my mind spinning. "A new job?"
"Sophia needs someone we can trust to protect and care for her," he explained, his deep voice carrying an undeniable pull. "You'd be her nanny, Elena, and you'd report exclusively to me."
I looked down at Sophia, who was still clinging to his coat, her eyes bright and hopeful as she watched me. When I met his gaze again, warning bells instantly rang in my head.
His immense power and the dangerous rumors surrounding him terrified me, but the financial lifeline was undeniable. I desperately needed the money, and the little girl's trust pulled at my heartstrings.
"I'll consider it," I said, holding his gaze with a steady voice.
A flash of victory lit up his eyes, and his smile grew. I knew right then that I was stepping into something incredibly risky, yet entirely alive.
"Mrs. Davison will call you," he commanded, looking down at his daughter. "Give her whatever she needs. Sophia, we need to go."
I watched them walk away, Sophia cradled securely in his arms. Even from behind, his absolute ownership of the space was mesmerizing.
By the time I finally got home, my mind was still spinning in a storm of thoughts. I kicked off my heels, dropped my bag onto the counter, and immediately grabbed my phone to text the one person who could ground me.
Me: Hey, you home? Need to talk. Just got back from Sterling.
Mia responded almost instantly.
Mia: I'm here! Get over here right now. You sound completely wiped out. What happened??
Ten minutes later, I was knocking on her door. Mia opened it up, her curly brown hair tied into a messy bun and her frame swallowed by an oversized hoodie.
Her hazel eyes went wide the moment she saw my wild hair, wrinkled skirt, and smudged mascara.
"Whoa, Elena," she said, stepping back to let me in. "You look like a storm hit you. What happened at that interview? Did you get the job or did you get jumped?"
Letting out a shaky laugh, I collapsed onto her couch and kicked off my shoes. "I don't even know where to start. It was intense. Crazy intense."
Mia sat down beside me, crossing her legs and leaning in with shining eyes. "Okay, spill everything. You were so ready this morning perfect answers, great outfit. Now you look like you ran through a windstorm. What went down?"
Taking a deep breath, the memory of the scream and Sophia's terrified face flashed vividly in my mind.
"It started out fine. The building was wild, all glass, marble, and smelling like pure cash.
Mrs. Davison, the HR lady, had this plastic smile, but right in the middle of the interview, a scream shattered the quiet.
It was loud and terrifying, followed by panicked yelling.
Mrs. Davison tried to say something, but I was already running. I didn't even think; I just moved."
Mia's jaw dropped, her hand flying to her mouth. "You ran toward a scream? Elena, are you nuts? What if it was dangerous?"
"I know," I admitted, my cheeks heating up.
"But I couldn't just sit there. I found an exit door propped open by a fire extinguisher that led to the roof.
The wind was wild up there, but then I saw her a little girl, around five years old, standing right on the edge.
She was crying and screaming that she wanted to go home. "
Mia's eyes widened even further, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Oh my God, Elena. That's awful. What did you do?"
"I yelled out to her, trying to keep my voice as calm as possible even though my heart was hammering against my ribs. I told her to stay still, and when she took a step back, I lunged forward and grabbed her. She held onto me so tight, Mia, like I was her only hope. Her name is Sophia."
Leaning back against the cushions, Mia looked completely stunned. "You saved her life. Elena, you saved a child during a job interview. That's incredible! Did security show up? Were you in trouble?"
I shook my head as the memory of his arrival sent a fresh shiver down my spine. "No. That's when he showed up. Alexander Sterling."
Mia practically squealed, her voice jumping an octave.
"Alexander Sterling? The CEO? The incredibly rich guy everyone whispers about?
That one?"
"Yes," I said, his name feeling heavy on my tongue.
"He didn't just walk onto the roof, Mia he strode out like he owned the entire sky.
He's incredibly tall, and his suit cost more than my rent, but it was his eyes that threw me.
They're grey with silver flecks, and when they locked onto mine, I literally forgot how to breathe.
It felt like he could see right through me. "
"Wait," Mia interrupted, leaning in close. "You stared down Alexander Sterling on a rooftop after saving his kid? Elena, this is literally a movie. What did he say? Was he angry?"
"No," I said, my skin still tingling at the thought.
"He wasn't mad, just incredibly intense.
He rushed over, and when I tried to explain what happened, he just stared at me.
Then he said, 'Thank you. You saved her.
' His voice was soft but heavy, carrying this effortless command.
When he took her from me, his hands brushed against mine and it felt like a total shock. "
Mia grinned, her eyebrows shooting up. "Hold on. You felt actual sparks with Alexander Sterling? The scariest, most powerful guy in the city? You felt chemistry?"
"I don't know!" I cried, my cheeks burning as I twisted my hands together. "It was just a lot. He kept looking at me, sizing me up with this deep curiosity. Then he asked about the interview, and just when I thought I had completely lost the job, he threw a curveball."
"What? What did he say?" Mia pressed.
"He offered me a completely different job," I whispered, his exact words echoing in my head.
"He said Sophia trusted me and that they needed a nanny. It pays triple the receptionist salary, but I'd have to report directly to him. He said my name, Mia, in a way that made it feel like a claim. I couldn't even move."
Mia's jaw dropped completely. "A nanny job? Working directly for him? Elena, that is massive—and terrifying. The pay sounds life-changing, but rumors say he's tied to some really dark, shady stuff. Are you actually considering it?"
"I don't know," I sighed, my mind racing.
"I desperately need the cash for my bills, and Sophia was so sweet and frightened.
But he is incredibly intense. It's not just the rumors, the way he looks at you, the way he speaks.
.. he just pulls you in. I told him I'd think about it, but honestly, I'm scared. "
Mia's face softened into a serious expression as she reached out and grabbed my hand, her grip warm and grounding.
"Okay, listen to me. You saved his daughter, which gives you a lot of leverage, but you have to be careful.
Alexander Sterling isn't just rich; he's magnetic and dangerous.
Taking this job puts you directly in his orbit, and you won't just be able to walk away easily. Are you ready for that?"
"I don't know," I admitted, my chest tightening as the shadow of his memory lingered over me. "His look wasn't just gratitude, Mia, it was something much deeper. And Sophia really does need someone."
