Chapter 2

I stood in front of the mirror, my fingers shaking slightly as I smoothed down my black dress for what felt like the hundredth time. The fabric hugged my hips in a silhouette that was simple yet sharp.

After trying on a mountain of clothes, this was the one that felt right, it projected a quiet confidence without trying too hard.

My reflection looked pale and tense, and when a strand of hair escaped my neat twist, I tucked it carefully behind my ear.

My breath came fast as nerves and excitement tangled in my chest.

Taking a deep breath to settle my racing pulse, I reminded myself that I had worked with kids before at summer camps and tutoring jobs. Yet, this felt entirely different. It felt heavy.

The salary on the contract had shocked me, but beneath the excitement, something felt inherently off. This family hid things, dark, quiet things but I pushed the thought away.

I was good with kids, I loved their mess and their realness, and I was determined to prove myself here.

A glance at my watch snapped me out of my thoughts. Five minutes late! Panic surging through me, I grabbed my beat-up leather bag which clashed terribly with the dress and rushed out the door.

"You've got this, Elena," I muttered, catching one last glimpse of a spark of strength in my reflection.

The penthouse took my breath away the moment I stepped inside. Polished marble floors gleamed under soft lights, and the cool air carried a distinct scent of cedar and steel Alexander's scent, a fragrance that practically demanded notice.

Sophia was sitting on the floor, surrounded by an absolute fortress of toys and stuffed animals. Her wild, dark curls bounced as she looked up, her hazel eyes lighting up the moment she saw me.

"You came back!" she squealed, scrambling to her feet and running toward me, her sneakers scratching against the pristine floor.

I bent down with a warm smile, letting her small hands wrap around mine despite the nerves buzzing inside me. "Of course I did," I said, keeping my voice gentle. "I told you I'd see you today, didn't I?"

She nodded, her grin spreading wide as she pulled me toward her toys with a surprising amount of strength. "Come play with me!" she insisted, her sheer joy instantly cutting through my lingering worry.

Laughing, I let her lead me to the rug and sat down, immediately having a plush unicorn shoved into my hands. I held it close, ready to play, when Alexander walked into the room.

His presence hit the space like a sudden storm.

His gray suit fit him perfectly, sharp as a knife and emphasizing his broad shoulders and powerful build.

With his dark hair swept back, his piercing gray eyes cut right through me, pinning me to the floor where I knelt.

The air instantly grew heavy, thick with the weight of his power.

"A word," he said. His voice was a deep, low growl that left absolutely no room for argument.

I stood up, brushing down my dress to buy myself a moment as my stomach knotted into a tight ball. Following him into a quiet corner where Sophia couldn't hear us, I noticed how sure and commanding his steps were.

He turned to face me and silently handed me a photograph, his posture making it clear it was an order to take it.

The picture showed a beautiful woman with high cheekbones, warm brown eyes, and a brilliant smile. She looked strangely familiar, like a fleeting memory I couldn't quite grasp.

"This is Sophia's mother," Alexander said, his voice dangerously low and firm. "She is gone from our lives. She stays away from my daughter. Always."

I frowned, looking up from the photo to his face. His jaw was locked tight, a small muscle twitching beneath his dark stubble. "Who is she?" I asked, keeping my voice quiet and careful. "What happened?"

His eyes narrowed, hardening into cold steel as he went entirely still. For a second, I thought he was going to snap at me, but then he spoke. "She made choices. They cut her from Sophia. That's all you need to know, Elena. It's all you get."

The words hit me heavily, a conversational wall slamming shut between us. I nodded and handed the photo back, my fingers accidentally brushing against his. An unexpected spark shot through me at the contact. "Okay," I murmured, my voice soft.

He stared down at me, his eyes testing my resolve, searching for any sign of weakness. I held my ground and met his gaze.

"Good," he said, his tone final and strong. "Sophia likes you, which is rare. But you serve me. I expect absolute loyalty and absolute silence. Cross me, and you're done."

My throat went entirely dry, but I forced myself to nod.

"Of course," I replied.

Checking his watch a sleek, shiny piece of pure wealth his hard eyes snapped back to mine.

"I have work. You stay here with Sophia.

No leaving the building. I'll be back tonight, and she stays inside this penthouse. My rules."

Without waiting for a response, he turned and strode away, his boots echoing loudly against the marble. I stared after him, the image of the woman's smile still burned into my mind a mystery I wasn't allowed to touch.

Later in the afternoon, Sophia started getting antsy. Bouncing around the living room with boundless energy, she tugged eagerly at my sleeve with her small hands. "Can we go outside? I want to go to the park! Please, Elena?"

I froze as Alexander's strict command rang loudly in my head: Stay here, no exceptions. But looking down into her big, hopeful eyes pulled at my heartstrings. "Okay," I said, a pang of guilt stinging me even as I forced a smile. "We'll be quick. Just a little fun, right?"

She cheered, clapping her hands, and we got ready in a flash. Soon, we were walking outside as she skipped happily beside me.

The park was only a few blocks away, the sun felt beautifully warm, and the air smelled fresh with the scent of spring.

Sophia laughed as I pushed her on the swings, and together we fed the ducks at the pond and shared a vanilla ice cream cone that dripped down her chin.

Her pure joy pushed my lingering anxiety into the background, and for a little while, I forgot all about his rules.

The moment we stepped back into the penthouse, reality crashed down. Alexander was standing there like a dark giant, radiating pure anger.

His arms were crossed over his chest, his jacket hanging open to reveal his tense frame, and his jaw was clenched. His gray eyes burned into me, fury pouring off him in waves.

"Where were you?" he demanded, his voice a low, vibrating growl that seemed to shake the entire room.

My heart dropped, a cold dread pooling in my gut. "We went to the park," I said, trying desperately to maintain my composure as I set my bag down with shaking hands. "Sophia wanted some fresh air, and I thought—"

"You thought?" he snapped, cutting me off sharply as he stepped closer, his towering presence overwhelming me. "I don't pay you to think, Elena. I pay you to follow instructions. One rule stay here. You broke it. Do you have any idea what could have happened?"

Sophia immediately shrank behind me, her small hands gripping the fabric of my dress tightly. "Daddy, it's my fault," she sobbed, her voice trembling. "I wanted to go."

His eyes flicked down to her, softening for a fraction of a second before the anger hardened his features once more. He pointed firmly down the hallway. "Sophia, go to your room. Now. We will talk about this afterward."

She ran off, her frantic footsteps fading down the corridor until his terrifying focus crashed entirely back onto me. He stepped close, looming over me so tightly I could feel the heat of his steady breath.

"Do you have any idea who I am, Elena? What kind of hunters watch me? Watch her?" His voice dropped to a dark, menacing whisper.

"You do not take my daughter out. Ever. You put her at risk today. Do you understand that?"

Guilt and a sudden spark of defensive anger fought for dominance inside me. My cheeks burned as I forced myself to look him in the eye. "I'm sorry," I said, keeping my voice firm. "I didn't think a trip to the park was dangerous. She was perfectly safe with me."

"Safe?" He let out a cold, sharp laugh, and before I could react, his hand gripped my chin, tilting my face up to meet his.

His grip was fiercely strong, causing my breath to catch in my throat.

"You don't decide what's safe. I do. My life isn't a game, Elena; it's dangerous.

You don't get to walk off with my daughter like a fool.

Break my rules again, and you're out. Gone. Understand?"

I nodded slowly, his touch burning against my skin as my defiance faded. "I understand," I whispered, my voice sounding incredibly small.

He held my gaze for a long, heavy moment, his eyes a swirling storm of warning.

Finally, he let go and stepped back. "Good," he said, his tone final. "Don't test me." He turned and walked away, his boots echoing with a loud, heavy rhythm until I was left standing there alone, my pulse racing.

The moment I got back to my own room later that evening, I flopped onto the bed, completely exhausted by the weight of the day.

Grabbing my phone with hands that were still trembling, I dialed Mia just to hear a familiar voice.

Alexander's warning still rang in my ears.

The phone rang twice before she picked up.

"Hey, Elena!" Mia answered, her voice bright, warm, and feeling like an immediate lifeline.

"How did it go? First day with the kid—tell me everything!"

I let out a shaky laugh, running a hand through my hair only to find my neat twist was completely unraveled. "God, Mia, it was a lot. I don't even know where to begin."

"Start with the good," she teased, her tone comforting. "Did the little girl like you? Sophia, right?"

"Yeah, Sophia," I said, a small but genuine smile breaking through my exhaustion. "She's amazing, Mia. So sweet and full of life. She pulled me over to her toys right away and handed me this worn-out unicorn like I was her knight. I'm already hooked."

Mia laughed, the sound instantly calming my nerves. "Of course she did. You're incredible with kids, it's your gift. What's the penthouse like? As wild as we thought?"

"Wilder," I replied, visualizing the gleaming marble and the endless city views. "It's like a movie. Perfect, cold, and shiny. His scent is absolutely everywhere—cedar and steel. It just screams power. It's a lot to take in."

"Just like the man himself," Mia joked. "Did you see the CEO? Is he as scary and good-looking as the rumors say?"

I swallowed hard as those intense gray eyes flashed in my mind, pinning me to the spot.

"Scary, yes. Good-looking, sure if you like the 'I own you' vibe, which I definitely don't," I added quickly, feeling my face heat up.

"He's incredibly intense, Mia. I already messed up, and he made sure to show me exactly who's boss. "

"Wait," Mia said, her voice instantly turning sharp with concern. "Messed up how? What happened?"

Taking a deep breath, the rush of guilt and fear came flooding back.

"Sophia wanted to go to the park. He had explicitly told me to stay inside with no exceptions, but her big, begging eyes completely got to me.

I took her out, and we actually had a great time swings, ducks, ice cream.

But when we got back, he was waiting for us. "

Mia gasped over the line. "Oh no. Elena, what did he do?"

"He was furious," I whispered, my voice dropping. "He was like a storm in a tailored suit. He growled at me, demanded to know where we went, and then he actually grabbed my chin to force me to look at him. He was yelling about danger, rules, and how I don't get to make decisions for Sophia."

"Wow," Mia breathed, stunned. "He grabbed your chin? Are you okay?"

"Yeah," I lied, though my skin still tingled where his fingers had rested. "I'm fine. It was all about control, and he needed to make sure I got the message. I messed up, Mia. Rules are absolutely everything to him."

Mia went quiet for a moment, her voice turning cautious when she finally spoke. "Elena, I know you need this job, but he sounds dangerous. Like, serious secrets and bodyguards dangerous. Did he say why he's so strict about her leaving the penthouse?"

"Not really," I said, frowning as I toyed with the edge of my blanket.

"Just hints about people watching him and watching her.

Earlier in the day, he showed me a photo of Sophia's mom.

She's beautiful, but she's completely out of their lives.

He won't let her anywhere near the daughter, and he refused to tell me why. It's incredibly weird."

"That is odd," Mia agreed, her tone sharpening. "What if he's wrapped up in something deep? Not just corporate business, but something much bigger and darker. Are you sure you want to stay there?"

"I've thought about that," I admitted, my gut twisting into knots. "The pay is huge, the rules are terrifying, and he's... well, he's him. But Sophia is entirely worth it, Mia. She's like a light in the middle of his shadow, and I can't just leave her."

Mia let out a long, deep sigh. "I get it. You've always had a massive heart. Just promise me you won't get pulled in too deep, okay? You need to watch your back."

"I promise," I said, the words feeling heavy. "I'll be careful. I have to do this for her, and for myself."

"You will," Mia said, her voice warming up again. "You're strong, Elena. Don't let that scary boss of yours forget it."

I let out a genuine laugh, feeling my tightly coiled nerves finally ease a bit. "I'll try. Thanks, Mia. I really needed to hear that."

"Anytime," she said, and I could hear the smile in her voice. "Call me tomorrow and let me know if he growls again or if Sophia officially crowns you the toy queen."

"Deal," I smiled, hanging up the phone and setting it face-down on the mattress. As I lay there staring up at the ceiling, Mia's warnings and Alexander's threats tangled together in my mind. I was in deep now, and there was no backing out. Not from Sophia, and certainly not from his mystery.
