Chapter 15
Today is the day of the Charity Carnival to help raise money for the school’s athletic department.
Sutton and I have been helping my mom and all her friends with this for the last few weeks.
It’s all day, so we have to be there at six to help set everything up.
Sutton and I slept at the pool house last night, much to Kane’s dislike, so that we could help Mom pack up some of the items that will be auctioned off.
The carnival is going to have rides, a petting zoo, and all types of games to win prizes.
Supposedly it’s a giant hit every year and the entire town along with neighboring cities come out to support the cause.
Mom’s been on my case a lot lately about where I’m at most nights.
I refuse to answer and say that I’m an adult, and that Sutton and I are hanging with some friends.
I can tell she isn’t ecstatic about it, and that it must look awful to her little social circle that her daughter is out all hours of the night.
As if I care about social circles and all those snobs.
My inbox for work has been getting full lately and I just can’t seem to care to jump every time it dings informing me that I have another email.
My bank account has money that will last me for a long while if I decide to halt all hacking jobs.
Sutton jokes it’s because I’ve been struck by the love bug, but I think it’s because she and Kane take up all my time.
She doesn’t know the full extent of my activities and what I do, but she knows that I gather information for companies.
Keeping the dark side shielded is best for everyone involved and also the safest too.
Love? Do I love Kane? We have an amazing time together and I can’t seem to get him out of my every thought, but is that love? Obsession?
I shake off those thoughts pushing them to the back of my mind as Sutton and I grab some boxes and wait to be told where we are needed. We have a busy morning, and I can’t afford those types of distractions right now.
Hours later the carnival is in full swing and the entire town showed out for this event.
Sutton and I have just come back from changing out of our dirty clothes from setting up, and we’re walking around checking out all the booths.
I know the MC guys are working one of the food booths and can’t wait to try some of their cooking.
Everyone is having a good time as kids are running around with cotton candy and huge stuffed animals that are bigger than their little bodies.
Sutton and I are just a few booths down from the MC’s booth when a group of men in leather circle us.
They don’t look like the type from Kane’s club, and by the smell of them, they must’ve just come from a brewery.
“Hey, chica, wanna go for a ride,” a guy comments and steps into my personal space. I immediately recognize him from the race I did weeks ago, I think his name was Brock.
I try backing up, but we’re blocked in.
“No thanks, I’m good,” I say grabbing ahold of Sutton’s wrist as we try to move around them.
“Hey, why the rush? Let me show you a good time, I promise you won’t regret it,” another one of the guys says.
“We aren’t interested,” Sutton informs him as he bends down towards my face. I can feel her tremble under my hand as I tighten my grip on her.
“I wasn’t talking to you, puta, mind your business,” he snaps at her and then turns back to me with his hand running up and down my arm.
I notice his cut reads, President, and see a snake tattoo on his neck, so I can only assume that he’s a part of that Viper MC that’s been coming after Kane.
I shove his arm away from me, “Don’t ever put your hands on me,” I say, and I hear a few heckles from his crew.
When I look back at his face I think I’ve committed the ultimate sin.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see another group of men charging over from the area where Kane and his brothers were at. This is going to get messy.
“I’ll do whatever the fuck I please, puta!” he berates and grabs both of my upper arms giving me a shake just to prove his point.
Colossal mistake, dude!
One minute I’m being shook and the next, this asshole is getting his bell rung from Kane’s fist. Sutton and I are shoved out of the way as both MCs go at it.
It’s an all-out brawl happening and people are running to get out of their way.
I watch as men in uniform rush over. I can’t help but worry how much trouble our MC is going to be in.
Kane and Havoc are duking it out with the last two standing guys, but the police come in screaming and separate them.
“What the fuck is going on here?” one officer demands. I recognize him from when I use to live here. The badge on his uniform reads, Turner.
Both parties are silent, they just keep staring each other down. Kane and Havoc both shake off the officers holding them back from the Vipers and try to come over to us. More police have shown up and block their path.
“Why don’t you ask Hector and his clowns?” Kane remarks, pushing past the officers in his way.
Kane stops in front of me checking me over from head to toe before wrapping his arms around my waist pull me in to him.
My arms immediately go around his neck and I nuzzle my face in his chest. There’s talking in the background and orders commanded, but I can’t hear anything outside of our bubble right at this moment.
“You okay, Wildcat?”
“Yeah, he didn’t hurt me.”
“What in the hell is going on over here!” We hear someone yell and I hear Kane grunt. “I want every one of those thugs arrested and I want it done now. Today’s supposed to be about the children and this happens. Get this trash out of here, Turner!”
The voice sounds familiar, but I’m blocked by Kane’s large body. I peer around and finally see who it is and the audience with them.
It’s my stepdad, Mayor Dennis Burns, and right beside him is my mother with a few of her snobby friends along with Sutton’s father. We’ve drawn quite the crowd now.
The officers jump at his command and start placing handcuffs on both MCs. As one approaches Kane, I step out of his grasp to block them.
“You aren’t arresting him or anyone from his MC,” I demand in a firm tone to the young officer approaching us.
“Ma’am, please step aside and let me do my job.”
“I don’t think so. They didn’t do anything wrong,” I argue.
“Ma’am, if you don’t step aside this moment, I’ll have to place you under arrest for obstruction,” he tells me but his voice is breaking. He’s nervous as he should be.
I’m about to retort a smartass remark but get interrupted.
“Raegan? Raegan, what are you doing over there? Let these men do their jobs and arrest these criminals,” my mother screeches as she stands right next to Dennis, who’s smirking. When he sees me over by Kane, though, his face changes.
“Kane and his guys just saved me from these lunatics. They wouldn’t leave Sutton and me alone. Thank god they stepped in and to helped us.” I try to play the damsel in destress act.
There is a bit of shock running through my mother’s face, but she recovers quickly.
“Raegan, step back and let the police do their jobs, honey,” Dennis lectures and then nods to the officer.
“You can’t do this, they were helping us,” I plea.
“Babe, it’s okay. We’ll sort this out,” Kane calmly tries to assure me.
I’m shaking my head and block the officer again as Kane places his hands on my hips nudging me to move over. The officer tries one more time and I still refuse to budge.
This isn’t right.
The officer lets out a deep breath, “Okay, ma’am.” He grabs for my wrists to turn me around to cuff my hands, but all hell breaks loose.
I hear both Mom and Dennis shouting at him to let me go.
Then a flash of Kane’s fist moves over my shoulder connecting with, I’m assuming, the poor officer’s face yelling, “Don’t you dare touch her.
” All of a sudden Kane and I are both on our stomachs in the dirt looking at each other.
He has a knee in is back as two officers are cuffing his hands.
“Turner, have you lost your fucking mind? Get those idiots off of my daughter right this minute!” Dennis yells, and I’m quickly released and standing upright again.
Sutton runs over and engulfs me with her arms. Mom is right beside her checking to see if I’m okay while rubbing my back. I shrug off her touch rejecting her affection.
“Honey, are you hurt?” I hear the concern in her voice.
“I’m fine.”
“Honey, let these men do their jobs, please. You have no idea who you’re dealing with right now.”
“I know exactly who they are, Mother,” I growl pulling away from her again. “They not only helped me and Sutton, but that’s my boyfriend and his brothers you’re trying to have arrested.”
Her face is priceless. I think I’ve actually shocked her speechless, which never happens to Carly Burns.
“You…I…your boyfriend?” She glances down at where Kane is and then back at me, but then she turns to Dennis. For what? I have no idea. She’ll catch flies soon if she doesn’t shut her trap.
“Did you just say that the leader of this gang is your boyfriend?” Dennis asks as if I just stated that blueberries rain down from storm clouds.
“It’s not a gang, it’s a motorcycle club. There’s a difference, and yes, we’ve been seeing each other for a while.”
A smug voice interrupts our debate.
“Well, well, well. If the almighty Stone hasn’t gone and gotten himself an Ol’ Lady,” the guy that Kane referred to as Hector, jeers.
I hear Kane murmur fuck as he is being lifted up from the ground by two officers.
