31. Chapter Thirty-One
Chapter Thirty-One
Allie
There are two things they teach you in nursing school.
The first? How to deal with death.
It’s natural. Not to let it scare you.
Then they drill CPR into you, over and over, until it’s second nature. They tell you that if you see an accident, you'll want to stop and help.
It's who you are now. It's engraved in your blood.
But what happens when you’re the one who needs saving?
My eyes snap open, but I’m frozen. I can’t move.
All around me—shards of glass. Bent metal. Splatters of red decorate the ground.
“N-N-N—” I try to call for Nora, but the word catches in my throat, tangled in gasps.
I can’t turn my head. My eyes dart, searching for her.
“She’s awake!” a man shouts.
Jax?
God, I’m so tired.
“Allie!” Nora’s scream cuts through the fog, but I’m still stuck.
I need my babies.
I need Jax.
Why won’t they get me out of here?
“Everything’s alright, ma’am. Try not to panic. We’re going to get you out. Just keep your eyes open for me, okay?” the man says. “Can you tell me your name?”
Allie. My name is Allie Windsor. I have two daughters. They need me. Please, help me.
But the words won’t come. Not even a whisper.
“Do you feel any pain, ma’am?”
No pain.
My eyelids are so heavy. Everything’s turning into a blurry mess.
“No, no—keep your eyes open for me. They’re almost here.” The stranger’s voice cracks with urgency.
I want to tell him I’m okay. That I’m just tired.
That I just need to rest for at least a second.
“Would you guys get the fuck over here?” he screams.
But it’s too late.
I’m already asleep.
