Chapter 40

Chapter Forty

ONE WEEK LATER

Adalyn

I ended up meeting with Carina Brooks at her penthouse and looked around. It needed to be updated, but not by too much. She told me what her vision was. I told her mine, and then I merged the two concepts and created something she got excited about.

I had an ultrasound appointment in two weeks, and there would be no way I would be back in Seattle. So, my doctor called one of his colleagues here in the city, and she said she’d be more than happy to take me on as a patient for as long as I was here.

As I was on my way back to the hotel, my phone rang, and Harrison was calling.

“Hello.”

“Adalyn, where are you?”

“On my way back to the hotel. Why?”

“I’ll meet you there.”

“Harrison, what’s going on?”

“I’ll tell you when you get there.”

Now I was nervous. What the hell was going on?

Roberto pulled up to the hotel and there were all kinds of chaos going on. Harrison opened the door and helped me out.

“What’s going on?”

“Some pipes in the hotel exploded. We had to evacuate all guests.”

“Are you kidding me?”

“No. I wish I was, Adalyn. This is a major fucking mess.”

“I sent Xavier up to your room to collect your things. You’re staying with me.”

I placed my hands on my hips and cocked my head at him.

“What? You can’t stay here. My place is the next best thing, and you know it.” He pointed his finger at me. “You can stay in any guest room of your choice. Or you can sleep in my bed, and I’ll take the guestroom.”

“Your things, Miss Banks,” Xavier said as he handed Harrison my suitcase.

“Thank you, Xavier.”

“Come on, let’s go. The crew has it from here.”

He sent Roberto home, and we climbed into his limo. The whole ride to the townhouse, he was on the phone dealing with the disaster at the hotel. When we stepped inside, he asked me which room I wanted.

“I’ll take one on the fourth floor. Just pick one. I don’t care.”

I went into the kitchen, filled the kettle with water, and put it on the stove.

“What are you making?” Harrison asked.

“Tea. You want some?”

“I don’t have tea.”

“Yes, you do.” I smiled as I opened the corner cabinet and took down the box.

“Where did that come from? I didn’t even know it was in there.”

“I bought it when I went shopping for some kitchen items. Just in case any of your company ever wanted a cup.” She smirked.

“Ah. I see.” He grinned. “I’m starving. How about some Thai food?” he asked as he pulled a menu from the drawer.

“Sure. Sounds good. This little one is getting hungry.” I placed my hands on my belly.

The water was ready, so I poured some into a cup and took it over to the table.

“Food will be here in about thirty minutes. I’m going to run upstairs and change.”

I looked down at the ring I was wearing. Was the lousy luck starting to happen all over again? Was the hotel the first sign? Now it had me wondering, and I was getting nervous.

“You look like you’re in deep thought,” Harrison spoke.

“It’s nothing.” I waved my hand.

“No. Tell me. What’s wrong?”

“I’ve been wearing Mary’s ring for a week, and now the hotel had to be evacuated, and I had to come stay with you.”

“You think the ring had something to do with it?” His brow arched.

“I don’t know. I’d only had it two weeks when all that other bad stuff started happening.”

“Adalyn, things happen. Pipes break. Don’t go reading into something that isn’t there.”

“Oh, my gosh.” I placed my hand on my belly.

“What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

“I think the baby just kicked. Oh my God, Harrison. Come here.” I held out my hand.

I grabbed his hand and placed it on my belly.

“Holy shit!”

“Did you feel that?” I smiled.

“I sure did.” He grinned.

Our eyes locked on each other for a moment before the doorbell rang. Harrison walked out of the kitchen, and I let out a breath. We ate dinner, talked about our day and about the hotel and then I went up to my room.

“I’m exhausted. I thought I’d take a bath and maybe read.”

“You can take a bath in my bathroom. You haven’t checked out the fancy tub you picked.” He smiled.

“Really? You don’t mind?”

“No, not at all. Use it all you want.”

“Thank you.” I gave him a heartfelt smile.

“You’re welcome. Now go relax.” He winked.

I went into the bathroom, shut the door, and started the bath water. After twisting my hair up, I climbed in and sunk down until the water hit the top of my neck. I was so relaxed that I almost fell asleep. I climbed out and noticed that I forgot to bring down my pajamas with me.

Shit. Really?

I wrapped the towel securely around me, and when I opened the bathroom door, I saw Harrison standing in the middle of his room, shirtless and in black pajama bottoms.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were in here,” I said.

“No. I’m the one who’s sorry. I assumed you’d be in there longer.”

“I forgot my jammies.” I nervously grinned as I couldn’t help but stare at his six-pack, I always used to run my fingers across.

“I was just going up to my study for a bit.” His eyes raked over me from head to toe.

“Okay. Well, I’m just going to head up.” I slowly walked past him.

“Good night, Adalyn.”

“Good night, Harrison.”

I didn’t even bother with the elevator. I high-tailed my ass up the stairs as fast as I could.
