Chapter twenty-eight

Alex

Galen and Alex worked together to slide open the warehouse door. Upon entering, they walked over to Hoko and Ryo, standing by a fire barrel.

“When you said you wanted to get out of the building, Hoko, I would never have guessed we’d be visiting the warehouse district. You do take us to the fanciest places.”

“It’s good to hear you still have your sense of humor, Alex, given the circumstances,” said Hoko.

“It keeps me from falling apart,” said Alex.

“Understood, Alex. Galen, make sure the doors are completely locked and secured.”

“This all sounds very cloak and dagger,” said Alex.

Ryo said they needed privacy because they must assume the enemy knows everything they know. Hoko smiled and said he and Ryo had a plan to discuss.

Alex could see Galen as he shivered intensely from the cold, and asked if he should be outside this long in the cold weather while in recovery.

“Fine, mate.”

But Alex said he could see Galen was not OK and asked the group to step back from the fire barrel. He waved his hand over the flames, which caused them to leap higher and higher, before motioning with his hand for the heat to move in Galen’s direction. Alex smiled, knowing heat was a form of energy he could easily control.

“Cheers, much betta.”

“So, let’s get back to this plan. Tell me everything,” said Alex.

Ryo explained there was no way they could let any ichor samples fall into the hands of the Sons of Enyaluis. However, there was no way they could allow Danyal to be hurt, or risk the terrorists following through on their threat to release a dirty bomb on U.S. soil. He said the only way to ensure a positive outcome was to locate the terrorists first and launch a preemptive strike.

“Preemptive strike?” said Alex.

Ryo replied Galen had identified several mercenaries he worked with in the military who would serve as the strike team. He explained the team would be small, probably five or six members, since they weren’t prepared to conduct a large-scale assault on American soil. He said they needed to use stealth and surprise to our advantage; they needed to get in and out with minimal bloodshed. Ryo added each team member had a specialized skill set, with Galen being their sniper, and Ryo serving as the explosives expert.

“What’s my role?” asked Alex.

“Even with your remarkable abilities, Alex, I can’t put you at risk,” said Ryo.

“So, are you prepared to stop me? Think it over; I can remotely view, have super strength, and telekinesis.”

“You’re getting stronger,” said Ryo, “but your control is erratic at best, and things get destroyed when you get upset. I will not risk having you fall in the hands of the enemy.”

“If you need my help finding these sons of bitches, then you will have to let me participate,” said Alex.

“Not gonna let this go, Ryo. The stubborn is strong with this one,” said Galen.

“Thanks for the vote of confidence, Yoda,” said Alex.

Hoko added that wherever Alex goes, he would go with him as his mentor to keep Alex focused and on task.

Ryo took a deep breath before saying he’d consider letting Alex monitor things from a distance, but what he needed from Alex right now was to help locate the terrorists. He said the IT staff identified the origin of the video was from within a nine-hour radius of Boston, because of the transition data rate. This was more information than they had to go on yesterday, and it placed the group firmly on the Eastern Seaboard.

“But how can I find them? They stole the vaccination, so I can’t track their energy?” asked Alex.

Hoko said he had a theory that if they could narrow the parameters, Alex could focus on dead areas in the electromagnetic field. For example, he asked what Alex saw when he looked at the electromagnetic field around Ryo.

“The area is pitch black,” said Alex.

Hoko smiled and asked Alex if he’d come across other areas of black fields in nature. Alex said no and added all organic and inorganic matter had some electromagnetic field that he could see. So, if the enemy grouped together, he could look for the area with the most significant absence of energy. Alex smiled and said it might work, and asked when they could test the theory. Hoko said they could start this afternoon when Alex and Galen had time to rest, recover, and eat a healthy meal. Galen and Alex nodded. Hoko said they’d reconvene at two p.m. in the penthouse.

“Please give me the keys, Galen. I don’t like driving the Hummer, but you need more recovery time before driving,” said Alex.

Galen walked over to Alex and offered the keys before dropping them by Alex’s feet in the snow.

“Oops, mah bad.”

“Real mature, asshole,” said Alex.

Alex reached down to the ground and scooped up some snow, which he formed into a perfect sphere, before hurling it toward Galen and hitting him in the chest.

“With yur shite aim, surprised ya hit anything,” Galen said as he hid behind the side of the Hummer.

Ryo and Hoko stepped out of the warehouse to close the door. “OK, boys,” said Ryo, “save it for the enemy.”

Galen and Alex looked at each other and nodded before throwing their snowballs at Hoko and Ryo, who casually stepped aside to save being hit. Alex and Galen jumped into the Hummer and quickly made their getaway.
