Chapter 15 A Rainy Night Call

I had always believed prejudice was like a mountain.

Impossible to cross, impossible to erase.

Sheng Yichuan liked me now because I was young and pretty.

What about later?

When I grew old and lost my looks, I would still be the Country Girl from the countryside in his mouth.

So I would call off this Marriage Agreement with Sheng Yichuan no matter what.

As for Sheng Yan—

With such an arrogant younger brother, how good could the older one be?

When he offered me money and a house to break the engagement, he assumed that was all I wanted.

He was simply smarter.

Better at hiding his superiority and arrogance.

Ten days later, it was a rainy night.

I was packing in the dorm when Sheng Yan’s call came.

“What’s wrong?” I was surprised.

He had never called me first during this time. I was always the one reaching out.

“Chen Songhe.”

That was my childhood name.

I had told him, but he rarely used it.

I sensed something off. “Have you been drinking?”

“I miss you. I want to see you.”

Sheng Yan murmured softly,

“Is that okay?”

I threw on a coat and left without another word.

My roommate asked in surprise, “Where are you going at this hour?”

“Something came up.”

“Don’t miss the high-speed rail tomorrow morning. You’re representing the department for the teaching program…”

“I remember.”

Half an hour later I arrived at Sheng Yan’s place.

He had drunk too much, yet he still came to hug me the moment he saw me.

“What happened today?” I asked.

“Business dinner.”

“Aren’t you used to those?”

“Today is also my birthday.”

He sighed.

“So that was it. His father had won the election, and the whole family was celebrating with banquets and congratulations. No one had remembered his birthday.”

I comforted him. “Happy birthday. You can tell me whenever you’re unhappy.”

Sheng Yan looked up. “Really?”

“Really.” I gave him my usual gentle smile.

I cooked longevity noodles for Sheng Yan.

We talked for a long time about my grandfather and my hometown.

He listened carefully.

Sheng Yan was sleepy but kept his eyes open, refusing to sleep.

He said, “I feel like the moment I close my eyes, you’ll leave.”

“I won’t. I’ll stay with you.”

“Chen Songhe, wait for me.”

“Wait for what?”

“I’ll find a way to stand beside you openly.”

The rain was steady. His breathing gradually deepened.

It took me a while to answer.

“Sleep.”
