Chapter 56

DAX

I had to admit, I lost my shit a little while there. The only thing keeping me from shooting these two and being done with it was that Fiona would have been pissed I took that task from her.

That made me sound whipped. Maybe I was.

It also could have been that I knew she had her gun on her and could take care of herself. But bullets made really big holes, and I loved her body just the way it was. So I circled back to freaking out.

Fortunately, Jack and Hannah had been where we planned. Like old times, he had my back. Unlike old times, we let our women take care of the bad guys.

We’d literally stood by and watched as they cleaned up.

The police were busy cuffing and shoving the bad guys into the patrol cars when Fiona asked, “How is this going to keep your client from coming after you?”

“Me?” I asked. “You worried about me, sweetheart?”

She rolled her eyes, and I wanted to spank her ass. Later. I didn’t need to get hard in front of a bunch of cops.

I took her hand and led her over to Jack’s car. I leaned against the hood and pulled her between my parted legs. “My clients ask me to do things for them that could put them in jail.”

They were going to be pissed since their drugs were at the bottom of a ravine and lost their trafficking spot in Coal Springs. I didn’t think they cared too much about Leather Jacket Guy and his sidekick going to jail; they were disposable and easily replaceable.

“You doing the things can put you in jail, too.”

“Exactly. It’s a balance of power. But I also have Nitro–”

“Your tech guy?”

I nodded. “Yeah. I have him finding additional dirt on all of them. They know I’ve got my protection information. The more bad shit they do, the more I know.”

“Same with Jack?” she asked, turning her head to look at our friends.

They really were looking out over the view wrapped around each other in their own little love bubble.

“Same with Jack. He’s out, sweetheart. I mean, look at him.”

Completely whipped.

He might take some grief, too, but we could handle it.

Fiona was alive, which was a problem for some bad fuckers out there, so I needed to make sure she stayed that way. It wasn’t going to be hard. My dirt was now her dirt. She didn’t know it, but the good girl who didn’t break the law was now under the protection of a guy who liked to break it.

“So… so I’m safe, too?” I saw concern on her face. Hesitancy. Maybe even awareness of what she’d done and how she might truly be in danger.

I stroked her hair back, tipped her chin up so her eyes met mine. “Nothing’s happening to you with me around. I protect what’s mine.”
