26. Chapter 26

Mermaid Motel

Dear Ben,

Two can play at this writing letters game instead of having the balls to propose in person.

Okay, fine. You did propose in person when you handed me your letter while down on your knee holding a ring.

My favorite part was the rose in your mouth.

Although I didn’t enjoy you saying ouch every time I tried to kiss you until your wounds healed. Lesson learned.

Who knew my soldier boy was a secret romantic? Don’t worry. Your secret is safe with me. I’ve only told my sisters and brothers and Mom and Dad. Hmmm. Maybe it’s not a secret that my fiancé is a romantic.

Once again, you managed to surprise me. I’ve had to dial up my spy skills with Mr. Subterfuge around. I think I succeeded since I’m writing this letter to you to reveal my latest secret. (It’s a big one!)

Benjamin Ward, are you ready for the next step in our journey? Ready or not – the next step has arrived. Or, rather, will arrive in six short months. In case you haven’t guessed by now, I’m pregnant.

I’m not looking forward to being as big as a house during mermaid karaoke season, but I can’t wait to welcome the first addition to our family. I’ve already picked out a bunch of smuggler names in case he’s a boy and a bunch of mermaid names in case she’s a girl.

I don’t care either way – boy or girl. I just can’t wait to take this next step in our lives. Ready or not – here we go.

Your future wife (hopefully sooner rather than later),

Sadie

PS If you say you already knew I was pregnant, I’m going to hit you over the head with the hammer you think you’ve hidden from me.
