Chapter 57

The graduation ceremony blurred into a rhythm of speeches and applause, one voice bleeding into the next.

Commencement music swelled, faded, then rose again, echoing off the high walls of the gym.

Rows of plastic chairs lined the polished court, each one draped with white cloth. Gowns rustled. Caps were adjusted, then adjusted again.

Ilang speech pa at special performance mula sa isang dance group ng school and finally, the program shifted.

"Graduates, please prepare for the awarding of diplomas and honors."

Whispers sparked. Parents leaned forward. At mas maraming cellphone ang tumaas.

Names began to be called.

Si Kairi, pumapalakpak kung kailan dapat and smiled when she could. Then—

"Maya Alcaraz."

Parang biglang lumuwag ang paghinga ni Kairi.

She turned fully this time at mas malakas ang pagpalakpak.

A genuine warmth cut through her as Maya walked up the stage.

Maya glanced back just once, catching Kairi's eyes.

Then grinned wide and disbelieving, before walking toward the stage.

Ngumiti pabalik si Kairi, proud in a way that felt clean and uncomplicated.

She watched her friend accept the medals, certificates, diploma, and applause across the gym.

She deserves that, Kairi thought. All of it.

More names followed. More footsteps. More applause.

Hanggang sa may faculty member na tumawag kila Kairi.

"This row, please stand."

Sabay-sabay tumayo ang buong row, chairs scraping softly against the floor.

They were guided into a line sa aisle. As instructed, her mother stepped in beside her, offering a smile.

"I'm proud of you, Kairi."

Kairi nodded, unable to answer.

The line moved forward, names pulling people away one by one.

"Kairi Lei Ferrer."

Her shoulders tensed as her name echoed through the gym.

Sumalubong ang palakpakan na mas malakas kaysa sa inaasahan niya and for a second, it felt unreal.

Her mother squeezed her hand again, and together, they stepped out of line and climbed the steps to the stage.

Kairi shook hands with the faculty, smiling and nodding as she heard her name echoed back to her in congratulatory tones.

Then came the medals. One. And another. Then another.

Each announcement rang clear and bright—academic excellence and special commendations, achievements na pinaghirapan niya over the years.

Her heart stuttering with a fragile, unreasonable hope.

She saw Zoe waving subtly from two rows back.

But the seat she searched for remained empty.

Her gaze moved again. Slower now. More deliberate.

Nothing.

The realization settled in quietly, cruel in its certainty.

Miss Herrera wasn't there.

Wala sa likod. Wala malapit sa aisle. Hindi nakatayo sa may exit, trying to be discreet. Wala kahit saan.

The applause swelled again as the last medal settled against her chest, cool and heavy. Ngumiti si Kairi dahil alam niyang kailangan. Bahagya siyang yumuko, nagpasalamat sa faculty, and turned when she was supposed to turn.

As she walked back down the steps, the weight of the medals pulled at her neck, grounding her in the moment she had worked so hard to reach and yet, parang may kulang.

Na-imagine na niya ito dati. Not the awards, not the palakpakan—kundi iyong pakiramdam na may nakakakita. May nakakapansin.

Miss Herrera had been the reason school stopped feeling like a performance and started feeling like something that mattered.

She had been the reason Kairi stayed late, asked questions, and cared about more than just being good at something she already excelled at.

For the first time, achievement had meant growth. Effort. Choice.

At sa unang pagkakataon, it meant someone.

Kairi reached her seat and sat down carefully, folding her hands over the medals as if to keep them from rattling. Her chest tightened as tears burned sharp behind her eyes.

She didn't even come. The thought whispered.

Mariin siyang napalunok, lifting her chin as the next name was called.

Her vision blurred, but she blinked it back. Again. And again.

She held herself still through the rest of the ceremony. Hanggang sa palakpakan. And through the rise of music na hudyat ng pagtatapos ng seremonya.

She had made it. She had done everything right.

And still, as the graduates stood together with their caps poised for the final toss, there was one absence she couldn't ignore—one empty space in the crowd that hurt more than she was ready to admit.

Pero tumayo pa rin siya.

And she held herself together.

The gym dissolved into motion the moment the ceremony ended. Chairs scraped back, voices rose, laughter spilled over itself. Families surged toward the aisles, phones already lifted, and calling names.

She looked up.

And Zoe stood there, waiting with her arms already spreading wide and a soft smile plastered on her face.

Kairi blinked at bahagyang nagtaas ng kilay. "What—"

Hindi na siya pinatapos ni Zoe. Lumapit agad ito at niyakap siya. The hug was warm and firm, the kind Kairi hadn't realized she needed.

"You did so well," bulong ni Zoe sa balikat niya, voice low and sincere. "I'm proud of you, Kai."

Kairi's throat tightened.

Maya's timing, as usual, was terrible and perfect.

"Excuse me," sabi nito nang nakangisi. "Kasama ako sa moment na ito. We survived. All of us."

Kairi smiled, a real one this time.

They pulled apart just as Lara appeared, camera already in hand. "Okay, stay right there," she said, backing up a step. "Don't move."

The three of them leaned together, shoulders brushing. Lara snapped the photo, then another one just in case.

Families merged easily after that.

Nagpalitan pa sila ng compliments and jokes. Then more photos. Iba't ibang combinations and poses—parents with daughters at pasok-labas naman ang mga kapatid sa frame.

Kairi's parents hugged her tightly, one after the other with her mother smoothing her hair and her father's hand heavy and proud on her shoulder. Lara ruffled her hair when no one was looking.

"You were amazing," mahinang sabi ng ate niya.

Kairi nodded, swallowing past the lump in her throat.

Parents talked over one another, laughing too loudly.

Lara found herself cornered by Maya's siblings na binabato ng tanong hanggang napataas na lang siya ng kamay na kunwaring sumusuko.

At the far end of the table, the three graduates leaned close together.

"I swear," Maya said, rolling her eyes. "Those speeches felt longer kasi hindi tayo magkakatabi. I had no one to complain to."

Zoe laughed. "Magrereklamo ka pa rin naman."

Kairi smiled faintly, nodding at the right moments and adding a comment here and there—pero palaging lumilihis ang isip niya. The clink of cutlery and hum of conversation faded in and out habang bumabalik ang alaala niya sa kanina.

Inulit-ulit niya sa isip ang ceremony. Ang crowd. Ang palakpakan. And the way she had searched.

What if she was there?

The thought struck suddenly na puno ng hope. What if Miss Herrera had been standing somewhere she hadn't looked? Sa bandang likod. Sa may exit, sa madilim na part. What if dumaan pala si Miss Herrera just to see, tapos umalis din bago pa siya mapansin ni Kairi?

Her chest tightened.

What if I didn't look hard enough?

Another thought followed.

What if she's waiting now?

The idea took root immediately—Miss Herrera in her apartment, watching the time at iniisip kung dadating pa ba si Kairi. The image felt vivid enough to pull her upright in her chair.

Kairi pushed her seat back and stood.

"I—uh," she said quickly, catching their attention. "Punta lang ako sa bathroom."

Tumango lang si Zoe without a question. Maya waved her off, already turning back to the conversation.

Kairi walked out of the room, heart pounding harder with every step.
