Chapter 27

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Eve

The salty breeze from Puget Sound rolls over Alki Beach. It’s Seattle’s hidden gem for stargazers. The night is clear and calm, a rare sight in the Pacific Northwest. Across the bay, Seattle’s skyline glimmers in the distance. But here, away from city lights, the sky opens up. Stars dot the darkness. Some cluster in sparkling constellations. Others flicker softly against deep blue.

The beach is quiet. Only the gentle lapping of waves breaks the silence. Driftwood logs are scattered along the sand, forming natural seats. Each smooth, weathered surface invites stargazers to sit and watch. Sand crunches lightly underfoot as visitors settle in. They crane their necks to take in the expansive view. Nearby, a couple huddles close, their whispers carried by the breeze.

To the north, lights from Bainbridge Island twinkle. Directly overhead, constellations like Orion and Cassiopeia shine brilliantly. The stars seem brighter tonight. It feels as if the cosmos is on full display, just for Alki Beach.

Anticipation thrums through my veins as I gaze up at the star-studded sky. Beside me, Carter is a warm presence in the crisp night air. His excitement mirrors mine. It’s a palpable current between us as we wait, breathless, for the celestial show to begin.

Suddenly, a gasp ripples through the crowd. My eyes widen as ribbons of light unfurl across the dark sky, painting the heavens with an ethereal glow. Greens and purples dance in mesmerizing patterns, their tendrils reaching out as if to touch the earth.

“It’s incredible,” I whisper, filled with awe.

Carter’s hand finds mine. His fingers interlace with my own. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

The warmth of his touch sends a shiver down my spine, and I lean into him. In this moment, under the spellbinding aurora, the rest of the world falls away. There is only us, our hearts beating in sync as we watch the breathtaking display together.

I turn to look at Carter, his features softened by the gentle light. His eyes meet mine, and the intensity in them steals my breath. It’s as if the northern lights have ignited something within us, a connection that goes beyond our everyday lives.

“Eve,” he murmurs, his voice low. “Being here with you, like this… it feels right.”

His words resonate deep within me. Despite the uncertainties ahead, despite the obstacles, I am certain of one thing: my feelings for this man are real, and they grow stronger with each moment.

“I feel it too,” I confess, my heart racing as I hold his gaze. “Like we were meant to share this, to be here together.”

As the northern lights continue their dance above us, I am aware of the shift taking place between Carter and me. The connection we share, once a tentative spark, now burns bright. I know we must navigate this with care, but I can’t resist the pull that draws me closer to him.

A gust of wind sends a shiver through my body. I huddle closer to Carter, seeking warmth. Without hesitation, he wraps his arm around me, pulling me into his embrace. The heat of his body seeps through the layers, chasing away the chill.

My heart races at this closeness, the intimacy of the moment heightening my senses. I am aware of every point of contact. His arm around my shoulders. The strength of his chest against my side. It feels as if the world has narrowed down to this single experience, to the connection that pulses between us like electricity.

“Better?” Carter asks softly, his breath tickling my ear and sending another shiver down my spine.

I nod, not trusting my voice to stay steady. The northern lights continue their mesmerizing display, but I find it hard to focus on anything but him. The scent of his cologne, the rhythm of his breathing, the way his fingers trace patterns on my arm—every detail etches into my memory.

“I could stay like this forever,” I whisper, the words slipping out before I can stop them.

Carter’s arm tightens around me, and I feel the brush of his lips against my temple. “Me too, Eve. Me too.”

Cocooned in Carter’s embrace, the rest of the world fades away. The doubts, the fears, the obstacles standing between us—they all disappear, overshadowed by the simple rightness of being here with him. And as the northern lights paint the sky, I surrender to the magic of this shared moment, to the connection that binds us.

“You know,” I murmur, my voice barely audible above the whisper of the wind, “I admire your dedication to your students. The way you guide and support them… it’s incredible.”

Carter shifts slightly, turning to face me. His eyes, dark and intense, search mine. “Really?” There’s surprise in his tone, mixed with something warm.

I nod, holding his gaze. “It’s different from what I grew up with. My father, he…” I swallow, the words sticking in my throat. “He always tried to control every aspect of my life. But you… you encourage your students to be their best, to follow their own paths.”

Carter’s hand finds mine beneath the blanket, his fingers lacing through mine. “Eve,” he breathes, his voice low and sincere. “You have no idea how much that means to me. But it’s not just my students I admire.”

My heart stutters. “Oh?”

“It’s you,” he says, his thumb tracing gentle circles on the back of my hand. “Your strength, your determination, your kindness. Even after everything you’ve been through. You’re amazing, Eve.”

Warmth blossoms in my chest, spreading through me like honey. “Carter, I…” Words fail me, but in this moment, they aren’t needed.

Slowly, as if drawn by an invisible force, we lean toward each other. Carter’s free hand cups my cheek, his touch light and electric. I feel his breath ghosting across my lips, hear the pounding of my own heart.

Then, as the northern lights reach their peak above us, our lips finally meet. The kiss is soft at first, tentative—a delicate exploration. But as the seconds pass, it deepens. Carter’s hand slides into my hair, his fingers tangling, and I melt into him, every nerve ending alive.

In this perfect moment, everything else fades. The cold, the fears, the uncertainties. All that remains is the heat of Carter’s body against mine, the taste of his lips, the knowledge that we are on the edge of something rare and precious.

I know, with a certainty that resonates in my bones, that there is nowhere else I’d rather be.

Carter’s lips move against mine with a tenderness that takes my breath. His fingers trace the curve of my cheek, the line of my jaw, as if memorizing every detail. I lose myself in the sensation, in the rush of finally giving in to the longing I’ve felt for so long.

When we finally part, I’m left breathless and aching for more. Carter rests his forehead against mine, his eyes closed, his breathing ragged. “Eve,” he whispers, my name like a prayer.

“I’ve wanted you for so long,” I confess, my voice barely a whisper. “But I’m scared, Carter. My father…” I trail off, dread settling in my bones.

Carter pulls back slightly, his eyes meeting mine. In them, I see understanding, compassion, and a fierce protectiveness that makes my heart swell. “I know, Eve. But you’re not alone anymore. We’ll face this together.”

I nod, swallowing past the lump in my throat. “All my life, I’ve lived under his control. Every decision, every path, has been his. I don’t even know who I am without him.”

Carter’s thumb brushes away a tear I didn’t realize had fallen. “You’re Eve Moreland. Brilliant, kind, and stronger than you know. Your father’s control doesn’t define you.”

His words wash over me, a balm to my soul. For the first time, I allow myself to imagine a future free from my father’s grip. A future where I can chase my own dreams.

A future with Carter by my side.

“Thank you,” I whisper, leaning into his touch.

Carter smiles, his eyes crinkling in that way I adore. “Always, Eve. You’re not alone in this anymore.”

Wrapped in Carter’s arms beneath the dancing lights, I feel a flicker of hope. My lips find his because I can’t put into words the elation I feel.
