Chapter Eighteen - Pavel
Three days of forced rest have left me restless and irritable. The shoulder wound is healing cleanly—Dr. Belov removed the stitches this morning and cleared me for normal activity—but the mandatory downtime grates against every instinct that demands I be working, coordinating, maintaining control.
Instead, I’ve been confined to the mansion while Mikhail handles operations and my organization continues functioning without my direct oversight.
The indignity of it bothers me more than the injury itself.
I’m reviewing reports in the study when I hear footsteps in the hallway. I’ve come to enjoy the familiar rhythm moving with purpose rather than casual wandering.
Serena’s been avoiding me since we returned from the warehouse, keeping to her room except for meals that she takes in uncomfortable silence.
I assumed she needed time to process the trauma of her abduction.
Apparently, that processing period has ended.
The door opens without a knock. Serena stands in the doorway wearing fitted jeans and a sweater that shouldn’t be as distracting as it is, her hair pulled back to reveal the fading bruises on her face. Her broken finger is splinted and taped, the swelling mostly reduced.
She looks angry.
“We need to talk,” she says, closing the door behind her with deliberate force.
I set down the tablet. “About?”
“About the fact that you almost died for me.” The words come out sharp, accusatory, like my getting shot was a personal offense. “You put yourself between me and that bullet. You could have been killed.”
“I wasn’t.” I stand, moving around the desk toward her. “The wound was clean, no major vessels hit, full recovery expected within two weeks.”
“That’s not the point!” she declares, her voice rising. “You didn’t know it would be a clean shot. You didn’t know you’d survive. You just threw yourself in front of a gun for someone you were forced to marry, someone you’ve spent weeks treating like strategic property—”
“I protected my wife.” The interruption is calm, factual. “That’s what husbands do.”
“This isn’t a real marriage, Pavel. You’ve made that very clear. So why—” She stops, struggling for words. “Why would you risk everything? Your life, your organization, everything you’ve built, for me?”
The question hangs between us, weighted with implications I’m not certain I’m ready to examine.
“The thought of that bullet hitting you was unacceptable,” I say quietly, the admission coming easier than it should. “Strategy didn’t factor into the decision. Only keeping you alive.”
She stares at me like I’ve spoken a foreign language. “That doesn’t make sense. I’m leverage. A political connection. You’ve said so yourself that this arrangement is business, nothing more.”
“Yes.” I move closer, watching her pupils dilate as I approach. “That’s what it was supposed to be.”
“Supposed to be,” she repeats, catching the past tense. “And now?”
“Now you’re the woman I think about constantly despite knowing it’s a complication I can’t afford. The woman who’s changed the atmosphere of my home simply by existing in it. The woman I would have burned the entire city down to find when Kravin took you.”
The words emerge with more intensity than intended, weeks of suppressed awareness crystallizing into admission I didn’t plan to make.
Serena’s breath catches. “Pavel…?”
“I would have killed everyone between me and you,” I continue, the truth pouring out with brutal honesty.
“Razed every Kravin property to the ground. Declared war on every organization that stood in my way. The strategic concerns, the political complications, the risks to my position; none of it mattered compared to getting you back.”
“Why?” The question is barely a whisper.
“Somewhere between forcing you into this marriage and watching you integrate into my life, you stopped being leverage and became—” I stop, searching for the right word.
“Became what?” She takes a step closer, eliminating more distance between us.
“Mine,” I finish, the possessive carrying different weight now. “Not as property or strategic asset. Just… mine.”
For several long seconds, neither of us moves. Serena studies my face like she’s searching for the lie, for the manipulation underneath the admission.
She won’t find it. This is the most honest I’ve been since this arrangement began.
“I can’t stop thinking about you either,” she admits. “Even when I should be planning escape or hating you or anything rational. I just think about your hands and your voice and the way you look at me sometimes like I’m—like I matter beyond the alliance.”
“You do matter.” The confession feels dangerous but necessary. “Far more than strategy alone justifies.”
The space between us feels charged with weeks of suppressed tension finally given permission to surface. I can see her pulse racing in her throat, watch her breathing quicken, feel the shift in atmosphere as acknowledgment becomes something more immediate.
“This is a terrible idea,” Serena whispers, but she’s moving closer even as she says it.
“Yes,” I agree.
Then her mouth is on mine.
The kiss is hesitant at first—testing boundaries, confirming permission, both of us aware this crosses lines we’ve carefully maintained. The hesitation lasts only seconds before weeks of want ignites into something urgent and consuming.
I cup her face with both hands, angling her head to deepen the kiss. She responds immediately, her good hand fisting in my shirt while her injured one presses carefully against my chest. The taste of her is intoxicating, sweet and desperate and real in ways I wasn’t prepared for.
She makes a small sound against my mouth when I bite her lower lip gently, and the noise sends heat straight through me.
“Pavel,” she gasps when I move to her throat, finding the pulse point that’s been driving me insane for weeks. “We shouldn’t.”
“Tell me to stop if you want.” I scrape my teeth along her collarbone, feeling her shiver. “Say the word and I will.”
She doesn’t say anything. Instead, her hand slides up into my hair, gripping hard enough to sting, pulling me back to her mouth with surprising force.
The kiss turns fierce, demanding, all the anger and fear and suppressed desire of the past weeks pouring into the contact. I back her against the desk, my hands moving to her waist to lift her onto the surface.
She wraps her legs around me immediately, pulling me closer despite the way it presses us together with unmistakable evidence of exactly how much I want this.
“Bed,” she manages between kisses. “Not here. Someone could see.”
She’s right. The study isn’t private enough for what this is becoming.
I lift her from the desk, and she keeps her legs locked around my waist as I carry her through the connecting hallway toward my room. I wince as my shoulder stings, but it’s worth it to see the delight flash across Serena’s face.
She uses the movement to her advantage, kissing my throat, scraping her teeth along my jaw, making focused walking significantly more difficult than it should be.
We make it to my room through sheer determination. I kick the door closed and lay her on the bed with more care than the urgency demands, conscious of her healing injuries.
“I’m not fragile,” she protests, pulling me down with her. “Stop treating me like I’ll break.”
“You have a broken finger and bruised ribs.” I brace myself above her, drinking in the sight of her flushed and wanting beneath me. “Some caution is warranted.”
“Then be careful for your own sake too. You’re the one who got shot.” She reaches for my shirt, pulling it over my head with her good hand while being mindful of my healing shoulder.
The sight of her looking at me—really looking, her gaze traveling over exposed skin with undisguised want—makes something possessive and primal surge through me.
I return the favor, sliding her sweater up and over her head before working on the clasp of her bra with practiced efficiency. When the fabric falls away, revealing full breasts and soft curves, I have to pause just to appreciate what I’m seeing.
“Don’t stare,” she says, a flush creeping down her neck.
“I’ll stare as long as I want.” I lower my head to take one nipple in my mouth, using teeth and tongue until she arches beneath me with a gasp. “You’re beautiful, Serena. I’m going to make sure you understand that.”
I lavish attention on her breasts until she’s writhing and making sounds that will fuel my fantasies for months. Then I move lower, kissing down her stomach, feeling the way her muscles tremble under my lips.
When I reach the waistband of her jeans, I look up to find her watching me with dilated pupils and parted lips.
“Yes?” I ask, fingers already working the button.
“Yes,” she confirms breathlessly.
I strip away her jeans and underwear in one smooth motion, spreading her legs to see exactly how ready she is. The sight makes my mouth water—she’s glistening, flushed pink, beautiful in ways that make rational thought difficult.
“Pavel, please.” She reaches for me, trying to pull me back up.
“Not yet.” I settle between her thighs, ignoring her protest. “I want to taste you first.”
The first stroke of my tongue makes her cry out, her good hand flying to my hair while her hips lift instinctively. I grip her thighs to hold her in place, taking my time to explore every fold and sensitive spot until I’ve mapped exactly what makes her gasp versus moan versus curse.
She tastes perfect: sweet and musky and addictive. I work her with deliberate precision, alternating between broad strokes and focused attention on her clit until she’s trembling and desperate.
“Oh my God, Pavel.” Her words dissolve into incoherent sounds as I push two fingers inside her while my mouth continues its work.
She comes hard, her entire body going taut before shuddering through waves of pleasure. I don’t stop, working her through the orgasm and halfway into another before she finally pushes weakly at my head.
“Wait,” she gasps. “I want you inside me.”
I kiss my way back up her body, tasting her arousal on my own lips. “Patience.”
“I’ve been patient for weeks.” She reaches between us, finding my belt and working it open with surprising coordination given her injured hand. “I want you now.”
The demand in her voice makes me smile despite the painful hardness straining against my zipper. “Demanding.”
“You like it.” She manages to get my pants open, her hand wrapping around my length with confident pressure that makes me groan. “Don’t pretend you don’t.”
She’s right. I do like it. I love the fire in her eyes, the certainty in her touch, the way she refuses to be passive even now.
I shed the rest of my clothes quickly, then return to settle between her thighs. The head of my cock presses against her entrance, and we both go still for a moment.
This changes everything. Once we cross this line, there’s no returning to the careful distance we’ve maintained.
“Are you sure?” I ask, giving her one final chance to reconsider.
“I’ve never been more sure of anything.” She wraps her legs around my hips, pulling me closer. “Stop asking questions and fuck me already.”
The crude language from her polished mouth is surprisingly arousing. I capture her lips in a bruising kiss as I push inside in one smooth thrust.
We both groan at the sensation of her heat gripping me, impossibly tight and wet and perfect. I have to pause once I’m fully seated, giving us both time to adjust to the intensity.
“Move,” she demands against my mouth. “Pavel, please move.”
I pull back slowly, then thrust deep again. Her cry of pleasure spurs me on, and I set a rhythm that’s harder than I initially intended—driven by weeks of suppressed want finally given outlet.
She meets me thrust for thrust, her hips rising to take me deeper, her nails digging into my back with stinging pressure. The sounds she makes—breathless gasps and needy moans and my name in increasingly desperate tones—drive me higher.
“Harder,” she gasps. “I told you I’m not fragile.”
I grip her hip with one hand, angling her for deeper penetration while my other hand tangles in her hair. The new position makes her scream, and I have to capture the sound with my mouth to avoid alerting the entire household.
“Touch yourself,” I order against her lips. “Then I want to feel you come on my cock.”
Her hand slides between us immediately, fingers finding her clit with practiced efficiency. I can feel the added pressure through the thin wall separating us, feel the way her body starts trembling as she works herself toward another orgasm.
“That’s it,” I encourage, thrusting harder. “Come for me, Serena. Let me feel it.”
Her orgasm hits like a vise, her inner muscles clenching around me with rhythmic pulses that make maintaining control nearly impossible. I fuck her through it, chasing my own release while she shudders and gasps beneath me.
“Where?” I manage, the question rough with strain.
“Inside,” she gasps. “I’m on birth control, so just come inside me already.”
The permission shatters what’s left of my control. My rhythm falters, becomes erratic, then I’m coming hard enough to see stars—buried deep inside her while pleasure crashes through me in waves that seem endless.
We stay locked together for several long moments, both of us breathing hard, sweat-slicked skin pressed together in the aftermath.
When I finally pull out, she makes a small sound of protest that I file away for later consideration. I collapse beside her carefully, mindful of her injuries despite the boneless satisfaction making movement difficult.
Serena turns her head to look at me, her expression complicated—satisfaction mixed with uncertainty and something else I can’t quite identify.
“So,” she says finally. “That was insane.”
“Yes.” I reach over to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. “Regrets?”
She considers the question seriously. “Ask me again when I can think clearly.”
“That good?”
“Fishing for compliments?” But she’s smiling, the expression transforming her bruised face into something radiant.
“Simply confirming satisfactory performance.” I pull her closer, arranging her against my side with her head on my uninjured shoulder.
She fits there perfectly, curves pressed against me, one leg thrown over mine in casual intimacy that feels both foreign and exactly right.
“This complicates things,” she murmurs after a while.
“Yes.”
“We should probably talk about what it means. For the arrangement, I mean.”
“Later.” I press a kiss to her forehead. “Right now, just stay here.”
She doesn’t argue, just settles more comfortably against me with a sigh that sounds like contentment.
Something that feels uncomfortably close to genuine connection.
That’s a complication for tomorrow. Tonight, I have Serena in my bed, satisfied and willing, and that’s enough.
