A year ago, Dr. Kevin McCarthy came to Gansett Island for his niece Laura’s wedding to Owen Lawry.
His older brothers, Frank and Big Mac, convinced him to stay for a while.
His sons, Riley and Finn, surprised him when they decided to stay after the wedding, going to work for their cousin Mac’s construction company.
Having them close by was awesome, but the best part of the last year has been Kevin’s surprising relationship with Chelsea Rose.
He hadn’t been looking for anything like what he now had with her, but for the first time in his life, he’s truly in love.
He feels a little sick for himself, and mostly for his soon-to-be ex-wife, Deb.
He loved her, and he was a faithful husband, loving father and hard-working psychiatrist, who provided a nice life for his family until Deb left him for a younger man.
It has taken some time, but Kevin has realized Deb did them both a favor by ending their thirty-one-year marriage.
Big Mac calls a family meeting at the former Wayfarer, which had once been the go-to spot for day trippers right off the ferry.
Now it’s rundown and in need of a second life.
Big Mac proposes that he and his brothers and their children buy it as a family.
They would call it McCarthy’s Wayfarer. Kevin and Frank are in, but their kids need to discuss the idea with their partners and decide if they want to participate.
After the meeting, Kevin invites his sons to lunch at South Harbor.
They talk about Big Mac’s idea, which the brothers think is cool, especially since they’ve always adored their uncle.
Kevin is considering a permanent move to Gansett and wants to know what his sons are planning to do.
Riley has agreed to stay on for now, but Finn is still pondering his next move.
The boys tease Kevin about his relationship with Chelsea.
He admits to having fallen for Chelsea, who makes him happy.
His sons are happy for him but warn him that their mother is coming to the island for a visit.
Kevin and Chelsea have put their plans on hold until his divorce is final. Chelsea is ready to tell Kevin what she wants most in life.
“I think I might want to have a baby.”
For a moment, his mind goes completely blank. Of all the things he thought she might say, that hadn’t been in the top ten. Hell, it hadn’t been in the top one hundred. He tries to formulate a response. “I… um… a baby. Well….”
“I’ve totally shocked you.”
