Chapter 13

#HOTINSIDE

ADRIAN

The moment we stepped inside my rental cabin, the atmosphere shifted from charged to combustible.

Snow from our boots melted into puddles on the hardwood floor, but neither of us moved to take off our coats.

We stood there in the entryway, breathing hard, while unspoken words hung between us like a live wire, dangerous and electric.

“Hayes,” Maddox said, my name rough on his tongue.

I reached for him, my hands fisting in the front of his flannel shirt. “If you’re about to spout some nonsense about suddenly needing to get back to the store, fuck off,” I grumbled before pressing my lips to his in a hard kiss.

The sound of air rushing in through his nose and the feel of his fingers sneaking under my coat to clutch at my hips turned me on even more than I already was.

“No,” he said before quickly adding, “Not leaving. Not as long as you keep your hands on me. Your mouth on me.”

The words were hot on my lips, mingled with the scent of melting snow and mountain air. Maddox tasted like cinnamon, and I remembered the flex of his jaw earlier as he’d chewed on a piece of gum angrily.

“You didn’t like it when Nate touched me,” I said, suddenly realizing the reason behind his bad mood. There was grumpy, and then there was standoffish. Maddox had been unusually quiet at Nate’s place.

“No,” Maddox agreed, his voice rumbling against my chest as he turned us and crowded me against the wall.

“That’s rich, considering I’m not the one with a Nate fuck history,” I snapped. My fingers brushed the warm skin above his collar and dipped underneath the edge of the fabric. The scent of him was intoxicating. Now that we were inside the heated space, I could smell his body, masculine and warm.

“Didn’t mean anything,” he said breathlessly before nipping at my chin. “He’s not the relationship type.”

I pulled away and forced him to meet my eyes. “And you are?”

Maddox’s slate-colored eyes darkened as he glared at me. “Wasn’t before.”

The implication that things might have changed made my heart rate stutter. I opened my mouth to challenge him, to press him on whether he’d consider more than just a physical connection with me, but then I stopped.

How would that even work? What would it look like?

I couldn’t answer those questions right now, and there was no way I’d waste minutes I could be enjoying his body with stupid, needy requests for reassurance and real feelings.

My stomach flipped as the words tumbled out. “Want you to fuck me.”

Slate flinted and sparked. “Blowie didn’t do the job the other day?”

The breaths came short and shallow in my chest. “Maddox… I want… I just…” I couldn’t say it. Couldn’t admit that I wanted him to take possession of me, even if it was temporary. “Yes.”

Maddox’s fingers tightened on my hips before letting go and moving up to my wrists. He pulled my hands away from his shirt and pinned them against the wall next to my head. Then he stepped even closer and ground his hard cock against mine. “You want me inside you, Adrian?”

His low, teasing voice was melted chocolate that seeped into all of the spaces between us and lay hot and sweet on my skin.

My eyes fell closed. All I could do was feel the tight grip of his fingers, the thick ridge of his cock, and the warm breath of his dirty promises on my cheek as he leaned in.

“You going to be my pretty boy?” he whispered. “Let me take off all those fancy clothes and lay you out just for me to see?”

My dick was painfully hard and trapped uncomfortably behind way too much fabric. “Stop fucking with me,” I urged with about as much force as a cartoon feather floating above a sleeping cat.

Maddox’s teeth grazed my earlobe as his voice snuck into my ear. “Promise me the real Adrian Hayes.”

I opened my eyes in surprise.

He was watching me carefully as he leaned in to press soft kisses across my chin and cheek and lips. “Promise just for tonight,” he urged. “No mask. No filters. Just you. The real you.”

My heart thundered between us before I finally admitted the truth in a too-small voice. “What if I don’t know who that is?”

His smile was soft and kind, unexpectedly warm and understanding. “Then be unsure. Authentically unsure.”

The provoking asshole’s words should have made my dick soft and my anger flare, but they didn’t. It felt like an invitation instead of a challenge. An offer of a safe space. One I knew I could trust.

“I want you to wear me out,” I admitted, watching carefully for his reaction.

He nodded, as if that was already understood. The heat in his eyes smoldered. “And?”

“And I don’t want you to leave me in the middle of the night.” There. Even though I’d already laid it down as a condition in the car, maybe saying it again would get the message across just how important it was to me. I didn’t deal well with abandonment, and I needed him to understand that.

Maddox let go of one of my wrists and cupped the side of my face before pressing a long kiss to the side of my mouth. “I promise. No matter what happens, I will not leave until you tell me I can go.”

“It’s not like that,” I grumbled, sneaking my free hand up the back of his shirt. “I just—”

“Get in the bedroom, Adrian.”

I blinked at him as my stomach tightened. The sound of my name on his tongue when he normally would have called me Hayes did something to me.

“Or what?” I asked with a grin.

He pressed his lips hard against mine with a low grunt. “That fucking mouth, I swear to fuck.”

I didn’t remember getting from the wall to the bedroom, going from fully dressed to full-monty bare, or how the hell I ended up head-to-toe with Maddox in a sloppy sixty-nine. But I was very cognizant of how my orgasm was snatched away with one quick squeeze of his grip around my balls.

“Not yet,” he warned.

“Not—? Are you fucking… what? What? Let me come. I need to come. I was almost fucking—oh fucking fuck!”

Maddox’s slick finger breached my hole, but his other hand still held my nuts in a vise grip. I clenched around him and sucked in a choking breath.

“Easy,” he said on a chuckle, moving his finger across my gland and lighting me up impossibly more. “What’s the rush, Hayes?”

I closed my eyes and fell back on the mattress, letting my knees fall open so he could do whatever the fuck he wanted to me.

“Your body is offensively fine,” he said, like it was a disappointment. “Do you even consume alcohol? Preservatives of any kind? Jesus.”

He released my sac and moved his hand up the lower plane of my belly, his rough fingers catching on my happy trail.

I opened my eyes and watched his face. “Good, clean living,” I said, barely able to focus with his finger moving slowly in and out of me.

“Liar.” He turned around while simultaneously piercing me with a second finger. This one went in easier.

“Where the fuck did you find lube?” I demanded, feeling light-headed from the lack of blood available in my brain.

His low chuckle made my skin prickle. “Top of the bedside table, you naughty boy. Right where anyone could see it.” He leaned his head closer and nudged my cheek with his nose while his fingers began stretching me in earnest. “What were you up to last night, hm?”

“Had company,” I teased.

His face froze before his jaw tightened. “Oh.”

I grabbed the back of his head to keep him from pulling away. “I’m kidding, Jesus. I jacked off thinking of my grumpy videographer. What did you think?”

Maddox relaxed slightly. “I think you could get a hookup out here in two minutes, even though you’re twenty minutes from town.”

“I happen to have a hookup here. Didn’t even take two minutes. Just a blatant lie about not knowing how to drive in the snow.”

His eyes widened. “Wait.”

“I’m from Connecticut,” I reminded him. “I took my driving test in a winter storm.”

I suddenly realized I’d brought up the topic that had led to our discussion about his parents, and now it was my turn to freeze. “Shit, man. I’m sorry.”

His eyebrows crinkled before he realized the connection I’d made. His smile was soft and easy. “It’s okay. The wound isn’t fresh. But I sure as shit don’t want to talk about my parents when I’m getting ready to fuck you into this mattress.”

I ran my fingertips across the stubble on his cheek and chin. “How about we stop talking entirely?”

Maddox’s mouth crashed down on mine as his fingers pressed back inside me and thrust in deep, raking across the perfect spot as he pulled them back out again, leaving me suddenly empty and begging.

“We good to go bare, Adrian?” he murmured after another deep kiss. “I’m clear, and it’s been a while.”

Our eyes met. “Clear and on PrEP,” I breathed. “Yes. Bare.”

Within seconds, he was pressing into me, the slick, blunt head of his cock stretching me more than his fingers had.

“Fuck yes,” I urged, pulling my knees up to give him easier access. “Don’t go easy.”

His nostrils flared as he looked up from where he’d been watching his cock disappear into my body. “Provoking shit,” he grunted, flexing his hips and turning the stretch into a burn.

My fingers flexed on the bare skin of his hips, digging into the sides of his ass. “Still waiting for you to pull out and fuck off home,” I teased through panting breaths.

Maddox’s eyes narrowed, and his nostrils flared. “Said I wasn’t leaving.”

My body arched as he changed the angle and hit just the right spot where burn and bliss tangled together. “Ah, fuck!”

He thrust into me relentlessly until I was just on the brink of coming, and then he pulled out.

And shoved me onto my front before fucking into me again. And again. Shoving my knees up under me until my ass was in the air and my face was against the cool sheets.

All I could think, with my single remaining functioning brain cell, was that this was too good for me to ever give up. Maddox had said he wouldn’t leave… but how the hell was I supposed to walk away when my time in Legacy was through?
