Chapter 17
Real-World Challenges
A week had passed since Holly Mason returned from Maplewood, and the initial excitement of their reunion had settled into the rhythm of daily life. Lucas Harper’s office hours and Holly’s busy work schedule left them with only evenings to connect, and it was starting to feel a little… complicated.
Holly sat at her kitchen table, scrolling through her emails when Lucas called. “Hey,” she answered, trying to keep her tone cheerful.
“Hey,” he replied, a trace of tension in his voice. “Can we talk tonight? Not over text.”
“Of course,” Holly said softly, sensing that something was on his mind.
That evening, they met at a small café near Holly’s apartment. The cozy warmth of the café contrasted sharply with the chill outside, but neither of them seemed fully comfortable.
“I know we said we’d make this work,” Lucas began, stirring his coffee nervously, “but… it’s harder than I thought. Between work, commuting, and everything else… I feel like we’re barely seeing each other.”
Holly nodded, understanding all too well. “I feel it too. I don’t want to lose what we have, but it’s been tough adjusting to… real life.”
They sat in silence for a moment, watching the snowflakes drift outside the window, reminiscent of their holiday in Maplewood.
“I don’t want this to fail,” Lucas said finally, reaching across the table to take her hand. “I care too much about us.”
Holly squeezed his hand, feeling the tension ease slightly. “Neither do I. Maybe we need to be honest about our schedules and make small plans we can actually keep. It doesn’t have to be perfect every day… just consistent.”
Lucas smiled, relief washing over him. “I can do that. I want to do that.”
Holly returned his smile, heartened by the way they were navigating this challenge together. “Then we’ll make it work. Real life is different from Maplewood, yes… but we have the foundation now. We can build from it.”
And as they left the café, snow still dusting the streets, Holly realized that love wasn’t just about magical holidays or cozy moments by the fire. Sometimes, it was about facing challenges together, holding on even when life got complicated, and choosing each other — every single day.
