Chapter 18
A Weekend Escape
The following weekend, Lucas Harper surprised Holly Mason with an idea. “I thought we could take a short trip,” he said, his eyes twinkling. “Nothing fancy, just a little escape from the city.”
Holly raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Where to?”
“You’ll see,” he replied with a grin, refusing to reveal more.
By Saturday morning, they were on the train, heading to a small lakeside town just a few hours away. The air smelled fresh and earthy, a welcome change from the city’s bustle. Holly felt a rush of excitement — this adventure, though simple, felt special because it was theirs.
They spent the day exploring the quaint town, stopping at little cafés and local shops.
Holly found a tiny bookstore, and Lucas insisted they each pick a book for the other.
Holly ended up with a novel Lucas loved as a teenager, while she chose a collection of poetry she adored. “You’ll like this,” she said, smiling.
Lucas chuckled. “I’m sure I will… if you read it to me sometime.”
As evening approached, they reached the lakeside, where a wooden dock stretched into the calm water. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold. Lucas handed Holly a blanket. “Let’s sit,” he suggested.
They sat side by side, wrapped in the blanket, sharing stories and dreams, their hands brushing naturally, fingers intertwining. Holly rested her head on Lucas’s shoulder, the serenity of the moment washing over her.
“I love these little escapes,” Holly whispered. “It’s quiet, simple… but perfect.”
Lucas kissed the top of her head. “Exactly. Just like us. We don’t need grand gestures all the time — just moments like this.”
As the sun dipped below the horizon, Holly realized that their love had grown stronger, not just through the magic of a snowy holiday, but through the small, meaningful adventures of everyday life — adventures that were theirs, together.
