Chapter 19

Misunderstandings and Moments

The morning after their lakeside sunset, Holly Mason woke early, excited to explore the town more. Lucas Harper, however, seemed distracted, fiddling with his phone and frowning occasionally.

“Everything okay?” Holly asked, tying her scarf.

“Yeah… just work stuff,” he muttered, though his tone carried tension.

Holly hesitated but decided to let it go. They wandered through a local market, sampling pastries and chatting, but Holly noticed Lucas glancing at his phone more than enjoying the scenery.

Finally, Holly stopped at a small bridge overlooking the river. “Lucas… are you sure you’re okay? You seem… distant.”

Lucas sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry, Holly. I didn’t want to ruin the weekend, but a client called, and I can’t ignore it.”

Holly’s chest sank. “I understand, but… I wanted us to focus on this trip. On us.”

He nodded, guilt washing over his face. “You’re right. I got caught up, and I forgot why I wanted this weekend — to be with you.”

They stood in silence for a moment, the sound of the flowing river calming their hearts.

“I just don’t want this,” Holly said softly, “to be like… us struggling to fit moments together. I want us to be present.”

Lucas took her hands in his. “And we will be. I promise. This was a wake-up call — you’re the priority. Always.”

Holly smiled, relief easing the tension. “Good. Because nothing else matters when we’re together.”

They leaned into each other, the morning sun glinting off the river, and decided to leave phones and work behind for the rest of the day. They explored, laughed, and even tried ice skating on a tiny frozen pond, holding hands tightly as they wobbled and fell together.

By the end of the day, Holly realized that challenges weren’t a sign of weakness in a relationship — they were opportunities to grow closer, to understand, and to choose each other, even when distractions threatened to pull them apart.

And as she and Lucas walked back to their inn that evening, hands entwined, she felt certain: their love was strong enough to withstand anything, as long as they communicated and stayed present in the moment.
