Chapter 1 The New Semester

Tangled Hearts

The New Semester

It was the first Monday of senior year at Crestwood High, and Emily Harper was already running late. Her backpack was half-packed, her notebook slipping from her grasp as she hurried down the crowded hallway.

“Careful!” a voice called, and a tall, dark-haired boy caught her notebook mid-air.

“Thanks!” Emily said, cheeks flushing. “I’m Emily.”

“Luke Bennett,” he said, handing her the notebook. There was a smile in his eyes that made Emily’s stomach do an unexpected flip.

As she thanked him again, another voice chimed in.

“Well, well, if it isn’t Emily Harper.”

Emily turned to see Chloe Matthews, her longtime friend and occasional rival, leaning against the locker across the hall. Chloe’s golden hair shone under the fluorescent lights, and her mischievous grin made Emily uneasy.

“You remember Chloe?” Emily asked Luke nervously.

“Uh… yeah,” Luke said, a hint of confusion in his voice.

Chloe laughed. “Of course he does. We all remember me. But I see someone else has caught your attention,” she teased, nodding toward Luke.

Emily’s face burned. “It’s not like that!”

Luke smiled awkwardly, unaware of the silent tension building. Emily knew from experience that Chloe had a way of making any situation complicated, especially when it came to attention and affection.

Over the next few days, Emily found herself caught in a whirlwind of attention. Luke was kind, considerate, and inexplicably charming. He helped her with calculus problems, shared lunch tables, and even walked her to class when the hallways were crowded.

But Chloe… Chloe seemed to notice everything too.

Every laugh, every glance Emily gave Luke, Chloe had a way of being there first — or at least making it seem like she did.

And Emily couldn’t ignore the way her heart skipped whenever Chloe smiled at her, playful and teasing, full of energy that seemed to fill every space she entered.

By the end of the first week, Emily realized she was caught in something she hadn’t anticipated: a triangle of hearts pulling her in different directions. One was steady, comforting, and unexpectedly sweet — Luke. The other was exhilarating, unpredictable, and thrilling — Chloe.

Emily Harper was about to discover that senior year wasn’t going to be just about grades, college applications, or prom. It was going to be about matters of the heart — complicated, confusing, and impossible to ignore.
